How do you replace a gearstick?

Big lumps of metals and spanners.

How do you replace a gearstick?

Post by cozmik »

Please tell me that you just undo all the nots'n'bolts, slide the new one in and do them all back up again.

Or give me the bad news I suppose.

Oh and I need a gearstick too, if you have one for an '83 1.6d 5-speed.

The joys of classic van onwership eh?

good news is yes,you just do unbolt , change re bolt, bad news, you have to go under and remove the "gatebox" to complete the excersise

OK am looking at the exploded view in the manual & the gatebox is the housing box at the bottom of the diagram right? And I'm taking this off to remove & then replace the locking pin?

Sorry I have the mech skills of a monkey from the opening scenes of 2001 A Space Oddissy but am willing to try/learn. Preferably not the hard way.

ok, yes, the gate box is under, you have to remove it to get to the bolt that goes through the fork, you then undo the 10mm bolts up top, and lift it out, refitting is reverse, as they say

That sounds do-able. Just have to find a stick now.

Many thanks for the advice.

It spins. the outer tube snapped just below the bush. Inner bars intact. Looks like I have to replace the whole thing, following instructions above & manual diagram.

One more question, sorry. What gear should it be in to perform the stickectomy? I'm guessing neutral, but rather not work from a guess.

Hi . if you havent sedated your vehicle then I would recommend neutral,
It dont matter what gear its in, get it pinned and welded, done right they last for years, post or mail a picky and stick it in the post , you can have it returned th4e same day f.o.c.

Surely you need both halves of the stick to pin & weld it up. The short half's still in the van until I take the gatebox off and have it out. Sorry if I'm being dumb, I appreciate the offer, just don't quite understand it.

I'll post up a picture tomorrow if I can, although I understand this is even trickier than replacing a gearstick.

LOL sorry, I've been numbing my pain with Jim Beam this evening.

Ahhhh, cosmic,JB right Ive just grabbed a smallish jack D so will be on the same wavelength.

Yes you have the top bit that has snapped and yep we will be needing the bottom bit, so first thing in the morning (it gets light at 4ish 0 rop your spare wheel out of the way the carrier will provide a nice back rest then with a 10mm soccket and extention bar remove the 4 nuts hoding the box up to the floor,
with this down and out of the way undo the bolt that fastens your stick to a bar,
then parcell the hole lot up and post it to me and I should have it for monday/tuesday
it then gets sedated and brutalised and burnt and ground and slashed and cut and ground some more before winging its way back to you by return of post.

the price well whatever the postage is silly or you can go to vw and give them £70 odd? no maybe not
enjoy the jb and set your alarm
oh and YGM

Thanks for spelling it out mate. I've had a long day. I have to go to work in the morning but will get it done by Monday & in the post to you if I can have your addy.

Theres also a small hole in the outer now as I attempted a temporary pin fix this evening. My drill went through the outer, but wouldn't touch the steel inner. That's one tough piece of steel rod.

Or a shyt drill.
