What are the chances of this going in what is currently an '86 panel with an '84 1.9 DG in it?

The 944 engine is NOT VW, it is Audi. The original 924 used a modified Audi 90/100 2 litre fitted with an OHC head, and the 944 and 968 are merely developments of that block.
However, since VW also put Audi engines into T3s, it is not that big a deal. Just start with the RSA bellhousing from the 2.6 and the Porsche will bolt right up (it is Audi bolt pattern). I doubt it will fit under the lid, though, as it is a VERY big engine. The 10V Audi is a lot easier to do, and a lot more smoothe (and you can get mounts to fit).
