High oil usage!!

Post by Fully Loaded Cali' »

I have a 1.6TD JX. Engine is dry, no leaks from underneath, no oil in water, no smoky exhaust, no oil on the tailgate but am using 4.5ltr's every 600 miles

Where is it going??

Do these engines use much oil??

P.S just read the other thread... my turbo is new.

What oil are you using coz this pi$$ thin stuff you can buy these days is not suitable for older engines.

Any "branded" 15w40 (IIRC thats whats needed) oil, like Millers, Morris, Castrol, Comma, etc etc... use a D specific oil.. Millers and Morris do "niche" market stuff thats good..
I have used all of the above brands over the years... petrols and Deisels

Does quality of oil go for 1.9DGs as well? I use about a litre of Oil every 200 miles. I have good pressure in the cylinders and despite a bit of oil residue (wetness?) on the underside of the engine I can find no leaks. It does smoke a bit, but could it just be the thickness of oil?

I have a flat four petrol job and if I try to keep the oil level on the top mark I sometimes get a big cloud of smoke out the back and when I stop and check the oil it is halfway down to the other mark. I have to wonder if the flat nature of the engine allows oil to get into the barrels under the pistons and somehow lets it past the oil control rings. If I keep it about halfway between the marks it goes on forever withot the need to top up! or mabey I have a short dipstick?

1 ltr per 200mls sounds a bit much to me, a good quality mineral oil 15/40 or 20/50 in Summer is what you need.

I use Duckhams at £10.99 per gal.

Cheers shepster, I'll get me some of that to keep the old beast going. Probably going to give up on this engine after the summer!
