Autobox starter, Crunchie, grating....but is it the starter?

Post by KarlT »

Hi again....

Auto starter this time.
For a while now there has been a horrible noise when starting.
On list to do but as it always did actually start & engine & gearbox were fine when going, it was always pushed down the list.

Anyhow, Saturday, wouldn't turnover, was trying to but couldn't. Tried jump leads. Still not enough power to turn it over. Called RAC & with heavy duty leads off his heavy duty batteries it started with the usual grinding noise.

Thought ok, fair enough, knew it was coming, new starter required.

Took starter off today (lovely job) Thought it looked quite new. Has recon sticker on it & looks in good order.
Put it on a battery with jump leads, engages & spins lovely.

Got me worrying could it be something else? Could it be something inside the box?

Or is it just because its not under load?

Anyone else had this?

Come-on lads. Help me out! :D

Is it possible to be something in the gearbox?..........Please lord no!

Thinking about this calmly now I don't think it can be. Gearbox is working fine, no funny noises when running just on start up.

I had a grinding noise with a mini... turns out the drive cog was ever so slightly mismatched with the ring gear

I think, pretty sure, that the auto starter is different & doesn't have that bush.

Is that correct?

Well my fellow T3'ers I'm disappointed!

Have we reached the sum of your knowledge? Never thought I'd see the day!

Anyhow after taking starter to garage who said they could test it today, I'm none the wiser. They just wanted to put jump leads on it like I did days ago.

Think I'm just going to have to order the new starter from JK's. So may have a new/un-needed starter for sale at the end of week!
