Refurbishing locks
Ok, well my locks are a bit dodgy, (i can use a house key to open one of them, so decided to try and refurbish them.
Tried to follow the instructions on here: http://www.hallvw.clara.net/lockpart.htm
However I think I am being a bit thick. I can't follow them. I've removed the handle from the door.
[IMG:800:600]http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff21 ... k_0001.jpg[/img]
I can only see one screw (which seems to hold on a retaining plate for the lever and spring) but I cannot work out how to remove the barrel.
[IMG:800:600]http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff21 ... k_0006.jpg[/img]
Is the countersunk screw that is mentioned in the above link the one holding on this plate?
[IMG:800:600]http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff21 ... k_0012.jpg[/img][IMG:800:600]http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff21 ... k_0011.jpg[/img]
There is what looks like a pin of some sort holding on the 2 pronged jobby
[IMG:800:600]http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff21 ... 0008-1.jpg[/img][IMG:800:600]http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff21 ... 0013-1.jpg[/img]
which operates the lock in the door, which seems to be attached to the square lug on the end of the barrel.
[IMG:800:600]http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff21 ... k_0007.jpg[/img]
however I have no idea whether it needs to come out or how to get it out.
I'm completely stumped. all help greatly appreciated.

You've found the pin that needs to come out. It's a roll pin and needs firm but gentle force to drift it through and out - supporting the fragile cast ally forked bit is the biggest challenge. Don't forget to have a key in the barrel as you remove it from the handle body to avoid tumbler loss.

Worn handle (housing)
I had a play with a couple of mine and to be honest they are slightly better after fitting new brass tumblers. Unfortunately on the whole, they still aren't brilliant because most of the wear in in the housing itself (handle) so you can only go so far to improve the lock operation.

Passenger side isn't too bad. Drivers side has so many grooves it almost looks like it's threaded.
Does anyone know if the GSF or Justkampers door handles are original vw OEM jobbies? Are these cab door handle/locks still available from VW? Also, will VW change the tumblers on the new lock to my request or is that something I have to do myself?

They are indeed stil available from VW. At least they are in the US. My wholesale source still gets them by the dozens from Germany.
I use a good brake cleaner to remove the years of crud in the lock mechanisms. Bought a pin drive/drift specific to drive out that roll pin. If you must use a nail or an old drill bit, grind the tip flat so as not to end up wedging it inside the rollpin. It makes it more difficult to remove that way. After you've reassembled the lock, don't forget to use some light grease around the lock wafers and around the cylinder before reinserting into the barrel. WD-40 is not a good lubricant in this application. I've suggesfully repainted handles to like new condition with Krylon Flat black.
BTW, new handles are inexpensive enough but you still have to dismantle them to key them to same as your existing locks.

Dismantling the locks was easy enough (and in a strange way quite fun). However the casing which the barrel goes into has deep grooves all the way round so the barrel turns even when the tumblers are sticking out. And I don't think that re-sleeving the casing will be possible; so it looks like its new handle time.

Definitely not worth re-sleeving. Replace them while the parts are still available new.
Cheers,

Just rang my local VW Van centre and they said that the handles from them are now obsolete.
part no. 251837205 made obsolete 24/12/07 dropped without super-cession
Just looked on Just kampoers, they have a generic one at 28 quid in stock, yet they claim to have OEM handles coming in on the 09/07/08 for £50 quid.
Have they gone to the original handle manufacturer then?

Checked with my guy at:
http://www.vanagonparts.com
He sells the OEM generic ones as well. Just sent one to Scotland. Cost US$15 for the part plus $14 shipping. That's 15 quid to you. Go figure. These parts no doubt come from the same place J.K. gets it from. BTW, the guy (Jeff) takes Paypal.

I'm just a phone call away from him. I know he is busy coordinating the filling of a 40' container bound for the US full of T25 parts as I type this. He just needs a poke in the rib.

Jonathan,
I spoke with Jeff. He said he saw your order and will send you a reply. Keep in mind we are on a different time zone. Your request came to him after normal business hours here. In other words, he has only had it one business day.

Well, just got back from holiday to find a little note from the Royal Mail to say my parcel of door handles is waiting for me. Yay.
Bad news is there is a customs VAT charge of £3.57, fair enough -not too bad. The £8 charge by Royal "theiving b*****s" Mail is a tad excessive in my opinion.
Hey ho, at least I have new handles.
