Am I being ripped off?

Hi there wondering if anyone can give me some guidance. I have quite a bad oil leak, 2ft x 1ft patch after one night. I've had a mechanic look at it and he says that the push rod seals and the crank shaft seal need replacing and quoted me 300 quid to do it.

He was saying that he has to take the engine out to do the crank shaft seal and while you're there get a new clutch for another 100.

Is this around the sort of price I'd be looking at?

argh, garage prices........

prob about right, 6 hours or so work at maybe £35 a hour, plus parts

maybe a little less a hour, maybe a little more, maybe longer to do it......

4 hours to drop and refit, a couple or hours to do the seals, i wouldnt have thought it was massively out of the way, although you dont say what he charges a hour.

Hang on... is your clutch not working then?

personallyi think the garage suggesting you have a new clutch ready is a sign of a sensible chap, considering you are paying him to drop the engine out, if you do need a clutch, its no going to cost you to drop the engine (and or box) again to fit said clutch in the near future....... nothing wrong in that

Agreed. What's £100 to potentially save spending another £300, although we pay £58 for a 2.1 LuK clutch kit round here.

Unless it's soaked in engine oil ... at least the friction plate will be ufcked, mine was.
