Unknown VIN number

Post by syncropatrick »

Hi,

My VIN number starts W V 2 Z Z Z 25 which seems strange. Can anyone shed some light on the last 2 Zs? I've double checked and they are not 2s! According to the forum wiki and the webpage http://www.vanagon.com/info/vin/ the last two Zs should be engine series and restraint system.

There are also other codes on the plate - '056B1006V' and '0340171'. What are these? Is the first one the paint number and how do I decipher it?

cheers
Patrick.

Patrick,

You are corrrect as to what the two Z's represent. However, VW did not appear use those digits on vehicles which were delivered to countries which do not require them. For example, T3's (aka T25) delivered to Germany only had those ZZZ's.

If that same petrol powered vehicle was sold in the US it would say something like:

WV2VG0----- instead of WV2ZZZ---------

zs are filler used where other info not required, same thing with all euro vehicles/stateside vehicles I believe.
the other two numbers you quote are the type approval number and the VIN plates own number I believe.
other type approval numbers I know are 056B1017V
056B1016V and 0560211V, these are all off syncros.
The seven digit number is a consecutive plate number I think/guess.
Paint code etc info is on the white paper sticker if still there under the steering whhel on the bulkhead usually and in the first page of the original service book if still with the vehicle.
There's also a metal embossed tag under the nearside seat with some of this info on but I've not tried decoding it from there as it's a seat out job.

Aidan you have far too much time on your hands ..... shouldn't you be sucking through your teeth over a dead gearbox or ruining someone's country lane ?

Yes Aiden, shouldn't you be digging around looking for some pinion shaft shims or something.
