Van Cutting out

Post by Slackbladder »

Hi All

Picked up better half's surprise birthday present today - (1990 G Watercooled Auto Sleeper) today and made it home fine. Hoping to make it to BVF but.... problem is that it ran lovely on the motorway with no bangs or crashes at a steady 60 mph - but DID cut out whenever I slowed down leaving the motorway or at roundabouts which meant that i had to re start every time. I can t even say that it is intermittent because it isnt

I tried to slow the engine down by releasing the accelerator s l o w l y .. but she still cut out. It started fine on choke when i started her up.

Anyone any ideas?

When warm, turn in idle adjustment screw to open throttle slightly until it runs ok. Let us know what happens and if it runs ok or rough and we'll take it from there. :D

You ay it restarts fine on choke? does it have a manula choke or are you letting it cool down for an hour or 2??

Carb clean and a good service and set up might help..

its an auto choke and does its job well.

Only problem is when she slows down she cuts out.

Will take a look at the carb and put some carb cleaner through it. It might just be some crud. If not, then it the carb strip.

is the carb strip a straight forward job or a P.I.A?

before you rip everything apart, have a good look at the vac pipes to the dissy and from the carb, and the main vac pipe for the brake servo, it could be as simple as a vac pipe leaking or off..... the little rubbery bits at the ends of the mini vac pipes go porus and allow leaks you cannot see

cheers Hammy :D Will defo be trying Redex first.

Good to hear from you Mocki - you doing BVF? If so, see you there. Will be taking to cautious approach re fuel system. Fair to say that I am more of a keen amateur than a competent expert. Prefer the "measure twice and cut once" approach.

Will check the bits out and again... thanks for the directions :) :)

ok...so van is home - great on the move still stalling on the slow down. Looked at the pipes - all seem ok. cant see any Gotchas.

Tried the redex treatment with no success. Lots of smoke but still cutting out. Any ideas? Might end up with mechanic at this rate :?

right... have found the idle switch at the bottom of a white plastic tube. Moved it all way clockwise until it held... then switched anti clockwise to a comfy level.

Running a bit rich now so need to await the arrival of them Haynes manual to adjust the mix as she is running a bit rich!!

At least she is running.. off for a road test.

it occured to me today, out of the blue, whilst i was supposed to be concentrating on something else, check your fuel cut off solenoid, sticking out of the carb just above that there adjustment you just did......

with the ignition on, engine not running, remove the spade connector, and replace it back on, the solenoid should "click", if it is doing, pwer is getting there, now unscrew it from the carb body, and check the plunger is moving in and out when power is applied / taken off.......
it will be restricting the petrol flow at low revs, if it isnt working

if it isnt getting power, simply add a new power feed to it from the black wires going to the coil, by using the spare connection there, or making one

Steve you are a genius!!

Did as directed and bingo!! Running sweet as a nut!

Replaced petrol, vacuum pipes etc which all seem to help too.

Hope you managed to sort your van out too.... in between helping us lesser mortals out :-)

I owe you a beer!! 8)
