drive in / drive out engine conversion specialists?

Post by outback-kombis »

I've been browsing through the various threads of people's engine conversions and have been well impressed but these are all well beyond my spanner twiddling abilities

Does anyone know of a company who do a 'drive in / drive out' service for conversions?

I've got a 2 litre air cooled 1982 T25 which is in good shape but if I'm going to keep it long term I'm thinking about an engine conversion.

I recently drove a bay which had a 2.1 Subaru conversion and was blown away by how well it drove, how fast it was and how much better on fuel it was than my air cooled T25!

I want something that drives like that but I need someone to do it for me as I don't have the skills to do it myself

Can anyone suggest a firm I should be talking to?

Thanks.

Why's that?
Feel free to PM me if you would rather not make it public.

I just want someone who can do a decent job - quite happy to travel to get it done so if you know someone in Norfolk who does them I'd like to hear more.

Thanks.

Syncronutz would probably do it for you.

I know it isn't going to be cheap but I've got my eye on a running / driving Passat TDi as a source of bits.

I wouldn't bother contemplating swapping a petrol to diesel. I've been told it's a lot of work and you need a lot more than the engine. It is possible as mine is a Petrol converted to a diesel but Russell from Syncronutz did it on this vehicle for himself (I bought it later) so it was a labour of love. He didn't have to open his wallet too wide.

TDi is a different kettle of fish to the Subaru you asked about in the original post....

TDi.. IS a lot of work... and the van really would have to be in great condition to warrant it.. then factor in the air to water cooled work which again is a good bit... not trying to put you off, but you need to be aware..

You are looking at around £3,000 to get someone else to do a Scooby conversion. I bought a legacy for £550 and ran it for a few months whilst i collected the required parts. I put 1100 miles on it so i know it is a good, reliable engine. RJES is probably the best for all things Scooby. I believe he will have everything required for a good conversion soon. Until then Small car in the USA will also be another supplier. When mine is finished i will post a list of parts and cost.
I also lost my £500 deposit with TSR and bought the wrong exhaust manifold from the US + tax + postage these must also be figured in the price along with all the little odds and sods and petrol. All in all £4,000 i'm thinking.

Sounds about right...

I reckon scoobie/TDi etc wont leave change from 3500 for someone to do it and do it right... yes you can get it done cheaper... yes you can do it yourself cheaper.. but its hassle and a lot of work..

Its a lot more work than some think. I was recently offered a spare Scooby engine by someone who had bought one and thought he would just swap them over. It wasn't until he done a little research he found this out so offered me a spare lump for £50......err no thanks.
