Wiring up volkswagen foglight switch

Post by totallyconfused »

Hi - I am trying to set up a pair of fog/driving lights.

I have a relay etc. but am trying to use an original VW fog light switch. The switch came from another van so I do not really know about the wiring. P no is 251 941 535.

The switch has three posisitions rather than a simple on and off (two posistions). What does the middle posisition do?

There are three connectors (male spades) on the back of the switch.

one spade is + (assume this is positive feed from fusebox).

second spade is 83b. This is linked to the bulb in the switch. I assume this is the on bit and lights bulb on switch so you know your lights are on? Wire from this should go to 85 on relay.

Third spade is 83a. What does this do?

There is also a small spade on the back of the bulb. Is this for a pos feed to the bulb?

Any help - greatly appreciated - Christian.

You really need one of these :D Haynes manual 1982 to 90 water cooled 1.9/2.1 £13 inc postage ...good price!

The wiring diagrams are quite useful to answer your question - and hard to describe without one!

Yeah - that would be grand, but i never get on to well with wiring diagrams. Tend to find it takes me ages to work out what they mean and then even longer to find out I was wrong!!

Anyhow - I beleive the reason the switch has three posisitions is that it turns on the the rear fog light and then third posistion turns on both front and rear lights.

Still not sure about the bulb and if it needs a pos feed, or an earth.

But hey - the fog is beginning to lift (see what i did there!!)

you are correct, the first position is rear only, the second is both, the lamp requires a neg connection, as it takes its live from the innards of the switch.......

Thats the correct way, and the warning lamp only illuminates on the third possition.

mine is the other way round, rear is a legal requirement, fronts are not.

Yours may have been modded. VW in there logic wired them up to front fogs 2nd posistion, which most cases without front fogs did nothing, 3rd posistion front and rear fogs which might explain why the warning lamp only works on posistion 3 which is a legal requirment when the rear fogs are on.

Heres a wiring diagram in case it may help.

[IMG:344:800]http://i150.photobucket.com/albums/s88/ ... lights.jpg[/img]

J5 is the foglight relay, E23 the switch. L20 rear, L22 and L23 front lamps. Rear light earth is shown as 'Earth point engine compartment underneath coil.' Fronts are earthed on one of the crowns near relay plate (Fuse Box)
