If any body has any comments I'd be grateful....
My dad - in the motor trade man and boy (now semi retired) was not very supportive when we bought the Komet - probably realises it has potential to be a money pit!
He suggested it might be wise to change all the hoses in the cooling system as the vehicle is 19 years old - then spoke to a VW mate who said they can 'last forever'!!!
He has offered to do the job for us, but a complete set of hoses costs around 180 squids and it seems a bit daft to do it just for the sake of it. Any views?

You can't get all the hoses anymore ... many went obsolete ages ago.
A good Komet (or any T25 for that matter) will actually appreciate in value they all have the potential to cost you a grand at the drop of a hat .... but show me another £5000 vehicle that doesn't.

Thanks for the positive comment about the van standing a chance of appreciating - it's really quite nice - although I guess you never quite know what's under the respray! Having said that, the previous owners had photos of it stripped right down and it looked ok. It's nice inside too.
If anybody can lay his hands on parts, it's my dad - but even he was doubtful about availablilty. He sent me the print out of the diagram of the cooling system - scary!!
Perhaps we should take the view that 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it'!???

What I would say is dont worry about it, you will be using positive energy, negatively. ............ Yes of course things can break, or go wrong, after all, it is man made, but in a club like this, there are normally always people who will help, or have parts, or can offer advice to members problems, and invariably always a problem can be solved in some way or another.
Maybe a good check of the hoses would be a good idea, just so you can tell what state they are in, but if its not leaking, I would leave well alone, there may be time for that in the future. Sadly some parts are now near impossible to find, but we just have to be inventive, so we see another day.
On a different note .................. DO CHECK, your fuel hoses, ESPECIALLY the ones in the engine bay area, as they can deteorate, and fail, which means 9 out of 10 times .............. "FIRE". If your not sure, CHANGE THEM.

I wouldnt be changing them for the sake of it.. as said a good check over and regular inspections are the key, the hoses dont generally give too many problems, only when they have had cheap hose clips wrung up tight and if there are cracked rotted connections..
Fuel hoses are a good idea though and especially on the fuel tank and breathers, the filler neck should be inspected also and a new rubber hose on the filler neck/cap..

... but the solid pipework in the water system around the engine should be given a good check - some are classic culprits!
If it's a 2.1 theres a couple at least, one long one and ensure the oil/water heat exchanger is connected properly and it's hose pipes A OK
Just always keep an eye on temp (and warn whoever else drives it) and especially look at it if she seems to be losing power or struggling or pinking - slow down or STOP if its a lot above normal (on or a needle width above LED)
AA membership is your best insurance, they just love Relaying them home and are very efficient at it
