Yes it is mendable, If the thermo coupling is kaput, then it will not allow the gas valve to operate correctly.
Does the gas stay lit only for as long as you have the valve held in? - if so I would say it is definately the thermo coupling. Mind you I did have a lot of trouble with my old 2 way fridge with the flexi rubber/steel gas pipe clogging up with a wax like deposit from the gas mix.
Fitting a new 3 way fridge and copper pipes/manifold sorted that problem out.
Have a butchers in the Wiki, I seem to recall something in there about the coupling.
If you never have a route planned ...how can you ever be lost?

will have a trawl through the wiki later with Nige (resident thing fixer
)
Its not lighting at all, I get a flash & a poof then nothing..........almost as if its blowing itself out. I've tried with the gas knob (well, the gas stick, my knob fell off) on all settings and it makes no difference.
I did look on 'tinternet for a coupling thingy and the cheapest was £40! the bliddy fridge only cost me £50!

If it's a push / click type of igniter (piezo) I had this happen with my old van. Kept trying to ignite but not quite catching. When I took the fridge out to look there was a small 'stone' of carbon obstructing the chamber where the spark is formed next to where the gas outlet is. I think years of arcing had caused it to build up. I simply removed it and presto - off she went good as gold. Careful not to move the igniter electrode out of alignment though. Distance is fairly critical for both the spark and proximity to the gas outlet.

Thanks 1664
that sort of makes sense, bit of a job for the weekend methinks, I should have tested it before fitting really (duh) but as always I left everything till the last second

took us a while to get round to it
but, just as you said 1664 - there was some carbon on the thingy (?) causing the spark to go to the casing and not where it was meant to spark by the gas..........If I knew how easy it was to rectify I'd have done it before last weekend (manky bacon - mmmmmmm!)
excellent job with all your helps!
I now have a working fridge! yay!
