greasing gear linkage

Just had the spare wheel out to check before a trip and while it was out I sprayed all around the gear linkage with white grease.

What a difference the gears are like slick sh.....

Did same recently and boy! What a difference. Even when engine is cold and reverse is faultless now.

Its water proof grease basically used for exterior bearings and all things that get wet.
Don't get it on your carpet though as its almost impossible to remove.......

Now that is my kind of tip -

....sprayed all around the gear linkage with white grease.

Nothing too detailed or complex for me to misunderstand - I can even visualise the bits to do and the "spraying around" method without going out to the van.

The best bit is if I somehow manage to grease the wrong bit - all I have done is waterproofed something for a while.....

Off to find the white grease...

I like your style

If you can't find white grease any quality product will do. It just won't be as durable. So slap it on more regularly. I did mine three months ago and still fine. Despite zillions of gallons of aqua falling from our skies.

scuse my ignorance

Seeing as my spare is out at the mo I bought some white grease today and Im going to do the linkage next weekend
i was just wondering how will i know the linkage?, where is it?, whats it look like?

Easy one ... just did mine today.

Select neutral gear. With the wheel out of the way there is plenty of room to get underneath. If you look up you will see an oblong metal box secured by 4 small nuts at each corner, remove these nuts and the box will lift off. You will see the balljoint & linkage underneath the gearstick. Spray a blast of the whitestuff around the ball joint and on the linkage but watch where your spraying as it cam be nasty stuff in the wrong place .... i.e yer eyes

I would suggest eye protectors and a mask unless you hold your breath and have the lung capacity of a Jjapanese pearl diver.

Select all gears (including reverse) a few times then after making sure you are still in neutral pop the box cover thingummy back on and bobs yer firkin .... silky smooth gear changes.

Big improvement if you have a 5 speed gearbox as 1st gear can be a pig to select.

HALFORDS sell COMMA WHITE GREASE comes in blue aerosol can with grey cap and applicator tube under six nuggets as I recall.

Spray on white grease is great stuff easy to use and not only water resistant but also much more heat resistant than normal grease.

Remember to spray the insides of the box as when pushed across for 1st , rev, 4th and 5th (depending on what box you've got) the springy bit slides along the side of the box. basically be fairly liberal.

Also before you grease ensure that the spring loaded plunger is not sticking as this helps the shift from 1st to 2nd on 5 speed boxes

i have a really difficult to get into 1st gear problem that i've been living with for a while -
tried the above - and noticed that the middle section of the gear linkage has come / snapped off -
looks like a small piece of white coconut!?! type material holding / joining the 2 sections together -
does anyone know what this is? how to repair / replace? what its called would be a help! Plus - can i get a replaceemnt part anywhere?
as always - any ideas / hints gratefully received -
