Just collected my new syncro and.....

I love it! It is ace. Very very happy, but have some questions....

1. Its a JX 1.6TD. Sits at 65 / 70 revving at 3900rpm. Sound about right? Feels well nippy in town / lanes but feels underpowered at motorway speed... Better save up for that TDi conversion yeah?

2. Jesus its noisy. Much noisier that my old 2wd carpeted petrol t25 panel. Are they always this noisy in diesel? There is transmission noise, doesn't sound like a fault, just a slight whine. Is this normal - my old landrover was worse!

Will be after some slightly bigger wheels, 16". Anyone got anything? Going to lift the bus too!

speeds sounds about right,the jx is fairly noisy,gearbox should be almost silent,you will struggle to fit any decent tyres on 16" rims to a 14" van without body mods,cj.

I saw you on the M4 yesterday.

I love that van, I saw it at Big Bang, I was in mt 1.6TD 2wd.

My Syncro diesel was much noisier than my 2wd diesel. There is more carpet & trim in the 2wd. Tyres will make some difference.

There are things that can be done to quiet it up, just enjoy a cool van.

Get it polished up so it gleams! I love that colour...

For what it's worth, I have 215 70/16 BFG AT's on my 14" and haven't had to mod (read cut) the body work.
But I did have to pull the front wheels forward by tightening the lower struts (whatever they are called).
And of course resetting the wheel alignment afterwards.

My JX does about the same speed/rev ratio on the motorway but doesn't go much faster than lorrys though so I think 70 is about 60 - happy enough though.

Not sure what multivan trim is like but mines a mix of standard diesel van trim (plastic sound proofed engine lid and boot floor vibration damping stuff like our old petrol caravelle GL had - guessing thats a diesel thing but someones fitted afew GL bits to my van.) I suspect they fitted most sound proofing to caravelles, and selected bits to factory diesels. I've got caravelle GL soundproofing on the floor in the middle too.

Now it apears I might have finally cured the anoying squeek noises the van makes, at 60+ all I can now here is the slightly busy noise of the JX revving its breasticles off along way behind me and the slight hum from the BFG AT tyres - that must make it a dam site less noisy than my landy as I can't here the tyre whine on that (over the engine/overdrive) and its got MT's which will be much louder! Engine noise doesn't seem too bad in the cab but might be worse in the back with no luggage? I've still got some more antidrum pannels to fit to the plane pannels and a headlineing which I think should reduice the tin can acustics slightly.

Yep that was me on the M4 yesterday! Rush hour traffic, new van - lovely...

Further testing today and the humming is defo tyre noise, not transmission noise.

CJ - in the near future, I'll be in touch and get you to service and check the bus over - you are not too far from me.

If you get 16's on, it won't pull them unless you use low profile tyres, which I suppose is not the point?

If you think it feels a bit underpowered on M-ways, then it is, so watch you don't underestimate how much power is being used if there's a bit of an incline or a bit of wind about... and put too much heat into the oil for too long. Pretty sure its M-ways that kill these things... 70 on one day is one thing, even 75, 60 with everything against you (load, wind, incline etc) is entirely another...
