Tips on spray painting.

Post by KarlT »

Hi All.

Well mrs has now got the hang of this T25 & was thinking it was time to repair some of the dings picked up in the learning process!

Bumpers took the worst of it...........

[IMG:480:640]http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e377/ ... per003.jpg[/img]

But alittle body damage..........

[IMG:480:640]http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e377/ ... per002.jpg[/img]

Now I've filled the bumpers with fibreglass, rubbed down, made good with a fine filler, rubbed down & a quick blast over with primer.

What now?

Thinking to wet'n'dry the primer down. Another coat? Do I mask any of the bumper or just let blend in?

How's this sound...........

2X coats of primer
3/4X coats of red
2X clear stuff.

Do I rub down inbetween coats?

Do I t'cut before clear stuff?

:?

Blend, blend, blend or mask off at a break point (i.e. a shape change) which breaks the flow.

Rub down between each primer coat, start with wet 400 for the first primer coat and going down to wet 800 for the last primer coat.

When you get to the last primer coat, mist a very, very fine coat of contrasting colour on the primer and rub that off with wet 800 or wet 1000. This will take ages, but is worth it in the end.

How you apply colour depends on the paint type.

If you paint is not metallic you will not need clear stuff. Two or max three coast of colour should suffice.

You should only need to rub down between coats if you a*** it up or if there is a lot of dust/crap about. If you need to rub down your colour make sure it is dry and use wet 1000 (my brother uses 2000). Keep your water clean, in fact keep everything clean.

The key to a successful job is time and more importantly prep, spraying the colour is relatively easy and quick. Rubbing down and cleaning makes the job.

Just my tuppence worth.
