May be an idea to jack up the O/S of the van to tip the fuel away from the out let pipe because it will self drain if you let it.

A clean shallow bucket or bowl will catch any excess .......

Yep and a long sleeve shirt with rubber bands round the cuffs, petrol stings like hell when it gets to your armpits.

There's a much easier way of changing the petrol hose next to the fuel tank. To change it do the following:-

- Get 1/4" synthetic fuel hose and cut to length (on my 2.0 litre Aircooled engine it's a 7mm fuel pipe). These are available from any local motor factor.

- Immerse the ends of the new fuel hose in hot water for about a minute

- Clamp up the old fuel hose (with a plastic hose clamp)

- Undo the fuel hose from the fuel filter end and remove the hose from the fuel filter

- Put the new fuel hose onto the fuel filter

- Very quickly remove the old fuel hose from the petrol tank and put the new hose (with a jubilee clip) onto the fuel tank pipe.

Whilst you are changing that fuel hose, it is imperative that you check all of the other fuel hoses as well for chaffing, splits and fuel leaks.

That's how I replaced my fuel hose on my 2.0 litre Aircooled camper. Good luck with changing your fuel hose.

''Very quickly remove the old fuel hose from the petrol tank''.

The short length of fuel hose from the tank to the filter will be attached to the tank outlet pipe with a factory fitted crimp. These crimps are notoriously difficult to remove. It would be necessary to carefully saw off the crimp using a junior hacksaw without damaging the outlet pipe.

Pair of cutters or break off the factory fitted fuel hose clip with molegrips (without damaging the fuel hose)?? They usually work. Then get the old fuel hose off very quickly and put the new one on.

Not ''without damaging the fuel hose''! ....''without damaging the outlet pipe''.

There has to be a short metal pipe from the tank onto which the fuel hose is pushed & crimped at the factory. When sawing through the crimp it would be easy to saw into the metal outlet pipe. I used to have some molegrips but I can't see how they would grip a small metal crimp which would be partially embedded in the fuel hose.
