Crewcab current condition - Revised Links
Well she was finally dropped off at the spray shop tonight and the sprayer has promised me she will be returned to me in her underwear on Monday night so I can install all the mechanics then he will take it back and apply the top coat, her dancing clothes.
Here are a few piccies of her at the spray shop and I will post a few pictures of the prep work. It has been a bit of a hokey cokey spray job as she has had barcoat on once at my lock up but it was told cold and I did not like the bond of the paint to the metal work so most of it has come off again, and she is pratically naked again and looking sexy.....Grrrrrr

Ended up shot blasting the rear panel as it was just so much a pain in the arris

Well I have just got back from the spray shop after makeing Lara even more naked than she has ever been. I think she is beginning to enjoy it the big flouesey.
Attached is a couple of photos from the body shop.
I have also enclosed a couple of shots of the wiring harness for entertainment value. The box does not look to big on the first photo untill you see someone stood next to it on the second. Bearing in mind that the cosworth enigine has 9 ECUs attached to it, Dave has a big job ahead of him to get it sorted.
In relation to the Wheels, I don't know what type they are they are just big and chunky. I have two more sets which I am going to try on her then make my mind up although I do thin she looks good in these.
I think for the run to France I am going to put really skinny wheels on the back incase a snatch of the clutch occurs and the wheels will give up first rather than transfering all the power into the gearbox creating possible failure.
Enjoy the piccies:

Remember I have to install a 2.9litre 24v Cosworth engine in this, get it fully painted, fit an interior (none aquired yet) Mot it, Tax it Insure it before 14th February for the trip to France on 15th, trying to achieve it by 11th so I can drive Lara for a few days to shake her down
The final colour is a burned mettalic bronze, currently on Nissans. My painter is advising me it will either look awesome or poo due to the size of it. Risk time!!
Ulp!!!!!!!

Do you want to know what makes me jump up and down for joy and shout whoooooppppppeeeeeeeee.
I shall tell you, we spent ages working out the footprint of the wiring harness, spead it out on the floor all nice and bonny (considering it has been on a high shelf for past 9 months) and left it ready to start the modifications.
And I get a call today, you better get down here the mill has flooded. I open the shutter door and there is the full wiring harness (9 brains and all) under 7 inches of water.
GUTTED.
Just written the harness off and all the brains.

Just come back from spray shop, top bloke working on it till 1am each night with me.
Doors off as seen in previous pictures. Peeled off foot plate things and looked reasonable, cleaned it all up and previous owner had done a dodgy repair to step. Welded a new plate in and it looks alot better.
Got some welding to do in the readr cab area as well.
Just ordered some 6mm plate to plate up the rear chassis where the cossy space frame will mount, even though the engine is not being installed for France may as well do all strengthening works before she puts her new dress on for going out. Looking like she will be coming out of spray shop in primer on Saturday morning to have her temp pace maker fitted in the form of a 2 litre flat four standard water cooled unit in.
Looking like a bit of pressure has been removed to get her fully suited and booted for the France trip. Got to source another cossy wiring harness now for the modification. Engine due to be delivered this weekend. Will post a couple of piccies of the new power plant when it arrives and will post more progress photos on this thread as the work continues. Bit battered now so will post some piccies tomorrow night when I return from picking up the 2 litre unit.

I will post another couple of pictures tomorrow of the Crewcab in its current condition.
I have seen a wicked set of wheel for her so these wheel will be up for sale when she gets stipped for the rebuild, and I will sell the 18inch wheels as well to purchase the new wheels I have seen.
I spent most of last night re-welding past dodgy welds that have been undertaken on the crewcab. It looks like buiscuit tin has been used and a chicken has poo'ed over the join rather than a welder.
Had to rip the headlining to get at the roof section that was damaged by some scrotes who broke into the unit where she was stored before I bought her and used the roof to soften there landing as they came in through the roof of the building. Tried my best to get dints out of roof but it is to bad so we are having to put some body filler on roof. Not happy with that at all but the roof is solid with no rust and it is just a case of getting it to look right.
It is very frustrating spending 100's of hours on a vehicle and seeing no change but at least I know that in one day she will just transform and be sitting there in red primer awaiting the top coat.
I am hoping to install the engine this week and get it mechanically finished by weekend, but that lies in the lap of the body shop giving it back to me in Primer mid week.
Anybody know where I can purchase an extra 6 hours in the day as I am currently surviving on less than 4 hours sleep a day as I work for 11 and but the time I get to thespary shop unit it is about 8pm, work till 1am go home, get to sleep by 2am then back up and on way to work at 5.30am.
Time is a tickin

She is having a first coat of 2 pak etch primer then 2 coats of high build primer. She then gets a coat of red base coat then her final colour.
She is a burned metallic orange. The metallic coat over the base coat is about 10 flick coats in all different directions the three coats of laquer to make her really shine.
She has tinted windows, chrome bumpers, chrome shiney bits all over the place.
I have 4 very big spot lights for the front which I need for driving over in France near my house as the roads are super windy and have no lights and are heavily over grown with trees. The big problem is that if I mount these spots on a braket over the bumper they will affect the air flow to the rad. I am strapping the big oil cooler on the back behind the engine with some air scoops mounted under the engine to flick air up to it.
If there is a cooling issue when she runs I will modify the pipes that run from the front to the rear of the van and mount cooling fins along the length to try and add more cooling if that makes sence.
The flat 4 is sat on the floor in my lock up waiting to be bolted in but I am still waiting for her to be returned to me in Primer and the progress is exceptionally slow.
I hate it when elements of my projects go out of my control, I went down to collect a different engine last week so I could put the engine back in my control as the cosworth engine builder has had nothing but problems with the motor and has still not returned it back to me. I can not do anything to speed up the spray job, I have already worked on it for 2 weeks solid after work untill 1am in the morning to help accelerate the process but the final stages of the prep and paint are out of my hands.
All I can do now is work on the other bits of the crewcab, like the mechanics, interior etc. As of Friday 1st I am down to 14 days for it to be finished, MOTed and driven for a couple of days to shake it down. During the day I will be curing some lepers and turning manchester ship canal into wine if anybody wants some free booze.
You can just about see the holes in my hands and feet if I get this project back in my control and finished.
I will keep you posted and put some pictures up if there is any change in the tub.

Just an update, no piccies as of yet.
Crewwy is now being sprayed by somebody else as I got it back from the spray shop in bare metal and rusty, which was nice.
Hoping to get the tub in Primer by Saturday.
Engine builder has phoned me and the engine is fully assembled and ready for collection. I will pick it up one night this week.
POpping in to where it is being sprayed tonight, and if there are any differences I will take a coulple of piccies.

Well after 10 days of solid prepwork by a couple of my friends the crewcab shell has a first coat of Etch coat sprayed on it tonight and here are the latest photos.
Next step to fit the new power plant and plumb the bugger in

She is looking awesome. Next step up on the four post ramp and rip all the mechanics off it and replace with new.
It took the lads 6 solid days of shot blasting and oreo work to repair the damage done to the crewcab by the last sprayer leaving it as a bare metal shell to go rusty.
Hey ho, next phase of the wee beasty to follow.

Sorry, not been on here for a few weeks as been over to my place in France and working in London and ramsgate (note to self, never, never, never go out in Ramsgate again)
Will start cracking on with Crewcab again in a few weeks, but want to shift my mini first, so going to concentrate on finishing and selling that beast to give me some space.
Current condition is that the engine is now trial fitted in place, the support cradle is done, and it all works out fine. Got all my parts for the exhaust and I am going to build the system first, then plumb in the coolany then the fuel.
All will then come out and be assembled with all new parts ready for paint job.
Anybody know the pay load of a crewcab and what the maximum it can tow with a breaked trailer. EG what is the max train weight?
Cheers

Cheers for that, I was looking at a towing manual and it did not go as old as the transporter, but the transporter it mentioned had a braked tow capacity of 2 tonnes, I was just wondering if I should risk towing a 1.5 tonne excavator on its braked trailer with buckets and pecker down to the south of France with mine.
I have no worries about the mechanics of my crewcab as it has the 2.9V6 in it and all the compoanants will be brand new like brakes, suspension etc. It was more the legalities of it.
Starting working on my 67 cooper racing mini next week to finish off that so I can sell it then will get back on the crewcab and more updates will appear on this thread.
Head is full of my place in France at the moment and the planning involved in getting it done by the end of this year so all money is being pumped into that project at the moment, but with the crewcab the next few months or so are labour intensive rather than capital driven so should be able to do a fair amount of work on it hipefully to get things moving again.
