Diff-lock controls.

Post by KarlT »

Hi All.

With summer/Plymouth Volksfest coming. I've decided to have a mad rush, frenzied look at why my Diff-locks don't work!

Good points.......

I've got air pressure in the tubing.
The dash pull knobs go in & out.

Bad points.........

Diff-locks don't engage.
No Lights come on in control panel.

Now this last point I never worried about before, but read the other day that it should be flashing if the diff-lock is trying to engage.

Took it to bits.........

Number 4 on the connector always has power :?
Number 5 has power if I turn the lights on.
No volts on any other numbers

Was going underneath today to have a poke round but is drizzly.

As a side point fitted the engine cage for the first time (since I've had it) yesterday & there seems alot more vibration now when engine really revs up! As I'm driving seems to be coming from where the prop protection bars bolt up towards the front end.

Cheers CJ, but why doesn't it flash when trying to engage? Should it?

mine never flashes on either of the syncros I've had but they still come on when engaged.

I take it your not trying this with the vehicle stationary?
You need to be moving and sometimes turn from side to side a bit to get things to line up

Only the front diff light is ment to flash whilst thinking about engaging, its to remind you that you've just turned the difflock knob clockwise (to get round the safety catch that might be broken, another front only thing)) and then pulled it out - something you can so easilly do by accident  so they thought they'd make the light flash, and give you a missive multilanguage orange sticker to tell you what your doing. Surprised they didn't give it an alarm aswell, oh, wait, they did if you've got ABS and try driving too fast with the diffs locked.

The warning lamps actully operate completely sepearately to the difflocks, but need the ignition on to light (and vacuum for the flashing bit). If the lights are broken the diffs will still lock, assuming that bit works. More likely though the warning lamps still work perfectly but the pneumatics/mecanicals have failed/seased so the lights won't come on.

Theres plenty of stuff on here somewhere about unseazing difflocks and testing pnumatics. I went through it on both diffs last year (seazed, pnimatics fine), I'd worked out what I was doing for the second diff so that one took me under an hour  . Only cost me 2 'O' rings to fix, I wish the rest of the van was that cheep!
