Not a T25 but a bay question, help needed please

Post by Steve P »

Hi guys

The outlaws have a 1979 1600 Bay. Some idiot had put the wrong plugs in it, so as they were taken out to replace, they stripped the threads out with them.

The heads have been helicoiled, I've put everything back together, engine back in etc etc. and now the bloody thing won't start.

There is fuel getting through because you can smell it. There is a spark when you turn the engine over.

We replaced the coil, points and plug leads as the old ones were pretty well worn out.

Any ideas of where I am going wrong please?

Sorry to ask coz I know it's not a T25, but our trip away on Friday is hanging in the balance now.

Thanks

Steve

you say you can "smell " fuel, but are the plugs wet?, how good is the spark?, is it turning over fast enough to fire?, i would check the plugs are wet with fuel and then start from the distributor forwards,ie, cap not knacked or tracking, points correctly set , condensor not knacked, leads correct , plugs all tight and correctcly gapped ,presumably the timing is all good? fuel plus spark equals fire hopefully....

Does it sound like it wants/trying to start or nothing at all?

It just turns over and over, not even attempting to fire. We are going to take the rockers off and check that the valves are set properly.

There is plenty of fuel getting through, the spark is fine, the plugs are wet.
Have re-checked all of the leads.
Have checked the points which are new,
have replaced the condenser because the old one was faulty which we knew, we know the new one was working up until the problem with the plug threads in the head.
A new dizzy cap was put on too 100 miles ago.

Problem now solved thanks guys.

The 'sacred' notch on the dizzy meant absolutely diddly squat.

The dizzy had been put on 180° differently to what Mr Haynes said. We've re-adjusted the rocker gear to suit the dizzy as it is and she purrs now!
