Diesel mounting bars problem

Post by maddog334 »

Hi All
I have just removed my 1.9 dg and replaced with a 1.6 diesel, but the nearside engine mount bar doesnt line up with any holes at the front end, the offside is ok, it looks like it may need a couple of brackets??? can anyone with a diesel please help! .Does the engine mount bolt straight to the chassis or is there some form of bracket or adapters for the nearside front mounting.
Many Thanks
Martin

Martin.
I had the same problem that your having, looking from rear right side mounting bar(offside) fitted ok.
nearside was nowere near I had to weld a extension plate onto the nearside engine support an reshape it to fit an line up with pre fixing threaded holes in the underside of chassi leg, it will work just takes time and elongate the holes that you drill and use bolts with nylock nuts.
The reason is mine was an Air-cold 1983 reg on a Y.(Built 1982) yours 1984 after 1984 think VW made a slight modification to engine bay width, I also had a problem with my gearbox Diesel engine sits further back to back panel therfore gearbox mounting plate (brkt) was 2inch shorter, even bought a 4 speed diesel box took out DK box an fitted diesel box it was still the same,Tried different mounting rear plates but diesel brkt sat lower on box and could not get the height to bolt it up reverted back to petrol mounting brkt so decided to swap again an put my DK box back in, also I had to extend my rear gear linkage rod by 50 mm. (2inch). all fidly but does work, first engine I had in was a 1.6 turbo from a passatt eng code SB. engine was a load of sh-te Now running a 1.9 1Y still the same issues with gearbox an nearside mount, but all sorted now and runs extreamly well if you encounter anymore problems just e-mail me addy is in my signature.
