Engine Code Question....
Just bought a 1984 1.9 petrol.....well, thats what I was told.
But just noticed it has a DJ engine code....not DG....
What gives? Isn't DJ the 2.1i code?
Cheers Jon

Well.. its entierly poss that someone has fitted a 2.1 DJ lump in there, is it still running the DG carb etc?
It will be fine if the timing is set to 5 deg BTDC and running 95 UL.. and all in good shape.. you have a good bit more torque available with that configuration... They do need to run the oil cooler really though..
Or... its been rebiult as a 1.9 in which case they should have ground off the code...

Cheers for the response....Yeah its running a DG carb....
Apparently its a new[500 mile] block[got proof in history]
Interesting about the timing/oil cooler...as it does seem to run a bit hot, altho not overheat.....better check that then.....
New to watercooled vans, so still learning.....
Mind you so were the garage who fitted the motor..
apparently there was nothin wrong with the original.....just a seized starter, which was mis-diagnosed.....smells of B***S***, but who knows???
You gotta love VWs!!!!

fit an oil cooler asap, one of our esteemed members didn't, ignored the flashing light and occasional buzzer of doom, then deposited a piston on the motorway.
CJ should have one in stock, plus the required connections....you will have to change to a 2.1 tstat housing as well, and the oil filter shaft obviously needs to be the longer one.

Also.. what oil is in it? nothing less than a 15w40 should be used.. if a 10w30 then change it asap.....
Get the oil pressure checked out to, what is it actually doing..
Temperature.. should be half as a normal max running temp.. Gen VW new stat..
Now if you cant do any/much of this yourself then CJ cant be too far from you...

So it would seem that the wrong engine has indeed been fitted
Luv it..
OK.....Funnily enough I spoke to CJ ON Sunday at Vanwest, thru a mutual friend!! Who said exactly the same
Unfortunately at the time I hadnt realised about the DJ code!!!!
So oil cooler didnt come into it!!!
Would the new oil cooler/other bits be fitted as per DJ engine.... ie same place?? Assuming the DJ has an oil cooler....better break out the Haynes!!!!!
ONCE AGAIN THANKS
Jon....

DJ have an oil cooler as standard.. if you have the "late" cooling system then should be easy to replicate the same cooling circuit as the DJ..
It is ans isnt the wrong engine... fitting a 2.1 DJ to a DG is fine.. if done with consideration to the differences..
But.. you need to get the "low oil pressure" checked out and the cooling issue.. is it really that hot?? could be a faulty sender.. or gauge.. or if it is really that hot then thermostat id the first thing to replace, then maybe the rad is partially blocked... if it doesnt really get hot.. the rad fan should be kicking in at 3/4 on the gauge.. does it??

Gonna try and get hold of the engine suppliers.....still under warranty, just found it...dunno whether its transferable.....receipt sez 1915cc...no mention of recon or new on receipt...£890 supplied, would that be new???
Anyone heard of Elite VW Engines??
I'll check out the cooling system, and the pressure etc....and go from there.
Cheers again Jon....

Its an Elite?
Then I would say you have a good chance of getting all your questions answered!
Hubby has a 2.1 elite on a DG set-up, and I am currently running one in!
Try putting elite in the search engine and see what comes up. The only thing that worries me a little is who did the install?? Elite do free fitting....and I would expect the warrenty to be with the installer.....if they have installed incorrectly and upset the engine, its hardly elites fault!
Give them a call - it can't hurt.

(if its actually a 2.1, which it sounds like it might not be!!)
Confusing aint it....I've fired off an email to '..em
Was thinking they might not have bothered changing the number when they reconned it........
But it does have an X on the end......
Anyway I'll see what they say......
And get on with finding out about the oil pressure
