front seat runners, belts, welding, what to do now ???

Post by ambivert »

I just got a nice twin passenger front bench seat :D cheers Emma!!!

Unfortunately I have now discovered that the seat doesn't fit my van!
This is because my van doesn't have original runners anymore, the seats appear to be from a Ford and have runners which bolt to the floor of the van.

Apparently the original VW runners are welded in? No sign of them in mine.

I have found some from a breakers for 30 quid. How big a job is the welding? Not that I can weld, I just want to know what it might cost to get it done.

And apparently not only will I need a lap belt for the inner part of the bench seat but I will also need to replace the existing outer seatbelt?
Can it not just attach to a longer stalk ???

Talking of welding, the passenger seatbelt floor mounting is well rusty and needs patching up. But if the bench needs a different type of seatbelt... would this still attach to the same place on the floor?

I don't know what to do now. Is it better to (a) keep going with the bench seat, or to (b) put the single seat back in and then add a small single (possibly folding) seat in the middle... Or is that even more welding???

If I choose to put the bench in, what about bolting the runners instead of welding? Then it would be a lot easier to go back to the single seat if this was ever required?

Any answers to any of the above would be greatly appreciated!
cheers
Vince

Vince,
really sorry that you are having grief.....

as for persisitng or not....thats upto you.

Take your van to the scrappy, look at the runners and see if they will bolt. If so, you are away!

I will have a rummage in the garage and see if I can find a stalk that fits the main belt - but I have a nasty suspicion that you will have to change it! But you will definitely have to get the mounting pint fixed - or it will fail MOT!

Hi Emma

No worries, I am going to not put the bench in after all.

The only reason I wanted it was so my wife and baby could sit up there with me and we could all be together. But on the negative side there is the time/cost involved of fitting the seatbelts & runners, and then also the safety issue... the front of a rear-engined van is no place for a baby.

If/when I find the time and money, I will make it safe with bull bars which attach at the top as well as the bottom... Might have to make them first!
