Over reving 16td

Post by Darbs »

Any ideas? The engine on my 16td 1990 keeps over reving. I dont think its the accelerator cable as the revs just keep increasing ie you pull up to the traffic lights and the revs just slowly increase until its to loud so i put her into gear and hold her stationary with the brakes !! This brings the revs back down but she starts increasing again. Ive been using bio diesel recently so i stopped and used normal but it still happens.

Does it smoke when doing this?
Oil consumption?

Never noticed, it always smokes on start up as you would expect with a diesel, the turbo was replaced about 5k ago

How much oil is it using? Did not seee the bio diesel bit before, good chance it has something to do with it.

No waste of time and money.

Oil is first thing to check.

(picking brains) why would lack of oil make it over rev?

would suggest oil seals in turbo are knackered and allowing engine oil to enter the engine. Engine oil would burn in the engine air inlet and cause the engine to rev uncontrollable. Cant see how this would have anything to do with veg oil....

So long as theres a bit of hot air around, and some valves working properly...
Oil=fuel, fuel=fireing, fireing=revs - thats all there is to a diesel!

If it isn't running on the engine oil it'd have to be running on diesel/veg. If the pump has been overstressed with veg the fuel metering bits in the pump might not be working properly so it revs when it shouldn't? When its running away have you tried turning the key off? If its running solely by the injectors it should stop instantly, if its burning engine oil it could run on, sounding funny and you might have to stall it to stop.

You have obviously not taken apart any engines that have been running on veg oil, can be a long process but it kills them good.

I have turned the engine off whilst its over reving and it stops straight away, it does seem to over rev more when using veg oil, would be nice if plenty of wd40 does the trick ! but the accelerator pedal not returning wouldnt explain the increase in revs.
