exhaust manifold heat shields

Post by dave friday »

Well.. ive just done a full throttle check of inlet manifold area temperatures [ third gear up a 10 min hill!! ] with the temp sender over the inlet manifold ,the highest reading was 38 deg c [ the radiator fan was on the second stage!], the temp reading did go up 50 c with the engine off.The heat shields are missing,is it worth making/getting some and why?.
oh ambiant temp was 22 c.
any comments ect please ta.

if its between the exhaust manifold and inlet manifold (not familier with the TD) then radiant heat is bad..
Simple terms..
Inlet charge (air) should be as cold as poss (cold air is dense = more oxygen= more power, there is also an engine stress heat thing too, cooler air means cooler running), in reality its not as simple as that, so minimise the heat gains in the system, like drawing clean cool air from outside the engine bay, sheilding the bits you want to stay cool from the bits that are hot etc etc.. your turbo will heat the inlet air up a good bit just by compressing it.. but also the heat transfer as the hot and cold sides are bolted together..
