Crown & Pinion Availability.

Post by type2nut2 »

One of the list members of the Australian Yahoo Syncro site has needed to have his gearbox rebuilt. On disassembly it was discovered that the crown & pinion needed replacing.

His gearbox rebuilder (a reputable and experienced VW and Syncro tradesman) was told that his C&P (5.43) were no longer available from VAG.

Can anyone confirm (or otherwise) if this is true? Aidan?

Apparently all Aussie released Syncro's were 5.43, as is my (UK release bus) so this may be of some concern.

On another but related issue I noticed when I was under my bus the other day that my front diff has AVM stamped on it, whereas the rear has AVL! Does this mean one of the units is likely to be not original?

The AVM is supposed to be 5.83. Surely it wouldn't be possible to drive a Syncro more than a few miles at most with different C&P ratios in the front and rear without something breaking in a big way?????

Thanks,

Andy.

5.43 c and p still listed here, I bought one last year from VW, I can try and get one if required, but I would require payment up front ad they are £400.

your front diff is ADM which is correct 5.43 with diff lock

Thanks Aidan. I'll contact the chap and get back to you to let you know if he's interested.

Where did you get the info on the AVM code?
I looked here at Simon's info here:
http://www.brick-yard.co.uk/VehicleSpec ... fo/gbx.htm
where it says 5.83. Just a typo?

it's an ADM

AVM is a 16" gearbox, ADM is a front diff, check the pages on the syncro pages on here, click on the syncronauts badge above......
