burning rubber smell

mates type 25 has come to a grinding halt on his 3rd trip out.
from what he tells me lost all power and shuddered to a halt. realy strong smell of burning rubber.

sorry about the vaugeness but has anyone got any ideas about possible causes.

seized wheel bearing tyre now got a flat spot and not rotating ?

ive just been told it was a clutch.
cable had snapped.. oh well
