steering column play

morning all, anyone know how the play in the top end of the steering column is taken up? [ radialy not up and down ].

I dont think, so I'm not[do I exist?]

Sometimes if you've been fitting a different steering wheel, the nylon top bush is able to move up the column, fitting a spacer ring of about an 1/8"to 3/16"th is all that is required to keep the bush where it belongs.
If you never have a route planned ...how can you ever be lost?

Cheers Tex, i have had the wheel on/off a few times [to replace the horn ring], i will check/do as you say.

Well... the ballbearing at the top of the steering is knackerd!! also the outer part is moving in the steering lock casting!.
any ideas/comments?.

New steering lock housing needed, fairly common fault.

Oh bugger!, another trip to VW, thanks Andy [ why isnt the bearing available on its own??].

Ive put some bearing assembly [ locktite stuf ] on the outer part of the bearing where it fits into the steering lock casting [ to stop it moving about ] seems to have done the trick, [ ive just realised that the bearing is an annular/thrust type so it will seem loose when not under pressure!! ].
