Mmm.. I am sure I read it somewhere too.. they may well have G in the chassis no, but it doesnt mean the mechanicals etc were not put on it in Japan.. I am sure its was an import duty tax thing..

I can remember as a kid, when dad was taking his 1975 2000c Microbus to the VW dealer, that he used to talk about kits of VW cars being sent here there and everywhere. It is how Uetenhage in South Africa got of the ground, by assembling German bits.

In the same vein, when we were just starting on the T3 transporters, and the syncro came out, i can remember the VW garage talking about offering the syncro as a kit, to convert a 2wd. I can remeber with green eyed envy looking at a brand new syncro in St. Albans VW (at the bottom of Hatfield road.) Didnt get one till 1990 though. This may have just been mechanics talk, as the kit would be somewhat expensive.

I very much think that was just mechanics talk.
VW would have never offered it as a Kit as there is far to much structual welding involved in the converting prosess.
