Should we attempt it? Fate or foul up?

Beware - Women with a spanner in hand!

Hello all you knowledgeable people.

May I apologise in advance if you have answered similar questions, I've had a good look though the other threads.

I've been quite unlucky with my beloved VW's so far....
Our first bay camper, we worked on for months. 2 weeks after returning from the spray shop, as we were putting finishing touches to the interior, it set on fire. (We didn't even get to sleep in it  ),

Enjoyed the T25 we got next.

At the start of Jan this year, We were foolish enough to leave our Golf VR6 running whilst we nipped inside (20 seconds). Obviously the insurance didn't pay out so we were left stuck, back at the bottom of the car ladder.

The same week, someone offered us a 1981 panel van (1.6 petrol, Aircooled), really cheap. A perfect shell for a project.
Bodywork was very clean, had to replaced engine mounts and changed the driveshafts but structure fairly sound, but boy is the engine causing no end of problems..... We've done the usual checks, But still we start the journey to work and end up finishing it on foot. :?

So when someone said they were selling their Jetta 1.8 Gti, 1991 we snapped there hand off..... (it was dark at the time). We could run the Jetta whilst playing with the van.
Jetta runs well, but when we cleaned off the mud, the bodywork was a mess (had a rear-ender botch job done)

Is fate telling us something? Should we put the Gti engine in or carry on fixing the van's 1.6 engine?
Or are we being stupid even thinking it?

How easy / impossible is this engine conversion? (I've read up on the diesel parts u need, checked availability, also partner works in car trade with lots of friends who might help)

As for our mechanicing skills..... I'd rank us as professional amatures. But we've little to loose and will have to spend a bob or 2 anyway.

Thanks for taking the time to read this message.

VWbabe :ok
Girls - don't ever expect to be more important than his van! Instead, love it just as much!

Hi Babe

The conversion isn't too difficult - there should be a stickied thread aboout what engine you can stick in - possibly the 1.8 gti is good for the van, I think it depends on which particular one it is (8v not 16v me thinks but check). Yep, you've got it right you need the diesel gubbings.

Anyway, welcome the club and hopefully we will see you both around. Have you applied for membership? Its free and details are on the main website (click the 80-90 logo for details). :D
