Even 850 tick-over, sudden drop, then quickly self corrects

Post by KarlT »

Hi All.

My 2.1 auto velle this time.............

Van ticks over, nice & even around 800/850 rpm.

Then for no reason (?) it will just stop for a slit-second before returning to normal, Then maybe a minute, or two, later do it again.

Doesn't actually stall, the RPM just seem to drop away, hard to tell to what level as it self corrects so quickly, but seems to stop then run again.

I'm thinking electrical/management but was wandering if anyone else has had this?

:?

As a side note........Seems to have less power than my same engined, same body, Syncro, but this is an autobox

Power doesn't seem to drop off when driving......just tick-over.

But thinking about it, it happens so quickly don't know if you/I would actually notice it.

How old are the plug leads? I had a similar problem on a van and that cured it - cheap option first...

They look pretty good, but age I'm not sure of.

How could they work, not work, work again?

Which make would be a quality replacement?

I have absolutley no idea how it worked!! But it was plug lead 4 on mine (last one!) that cured it, altho it was a carb not injected engine.
It would just drop out like you said and then be back to normal drove me nuts til i sorted it - hate sitting in traffic!!

Good Luck!!

Check you don't have multi point spark plugs in. They will work, but the engine is designed to run with 6.0 single point plugs.

Guy at Autoquip looked it up & told me it needed the 3 pointer plugs!

Have I been told yet more lies, false-hoods & half-truths...............

Forgot to mention that I run on LPG! It needs hotter temps to combust, hence the need for 6.0.

Sorry, I jumped in too fast with the wrong info!

Sounds more like the the idle stabilisation unit to me, a faulty plug would be consistently bad. Try by-passing it by connecting the two plugs together, like when you set the timing. See if that makes a difference.

I hope not Si, Had a poke around today. I'm thinking/hoping its number 3 lead. Would explain quite a few things....high emissions, lack of power, smokey on start up.

Where would I get some good quality, correct leads? JKampers has sold out.

German and swedish, i tried to geta set of proper quantums, like she should have, but not listed now at VW. GSF are not too bad, required a bit of squeezing on number 2, but o.k otherwise. GSF in Exeter bey!
