T25 (NEWBIE) a few questions
Hi guys, great forum... I have a T25 1980 air cooled, ive just had the inside all refurbished so she looks like new. 12 mths mot and new clutch. Getting her ready for a 420 mile trip and have a few questions....
When my partner is seating at the back she sais she can smell fumes, any help on that?
What type alloys will fit straight on to the T25? My blow heater works but no warm air? also i think i may have a little water leak front passenger floor any idea where that may be from?
any help would be great thanks

firstly, welcome.
Check your tailgate seal rubber, and also your floor and engine lid seal
no idea on alloys, sorry.
window screen corners are known leaking points, they rust behind the rubbers.
door seals also leak just above the door hinge.

the only alloys that fit straight on are vw carat alloys.the water at the front will no doubt be coming from the front window seal.a very common problem with these vans.as for fumes it could well be a leaking exhaust.or if its petrol fumes check your fuel lines...theres loads of info on our vans on the wiki.(button at the top of the page)...oh and welcome to the club

Air cooled + fumes (exhaust?) + no warm air.

The combination of the above 3 facts leads me to think that your heat exchangers are nackered. When they get really bad you will get exhaust fumes through the front heater vents!

The best thing is to get the heat exchangers & all the associated pipework checked out. Once it's all sorted you may actually get a small amount of warm air through the heater vents.

thanks guys, i know the heat exhangers need changing, however the garage said they had been welded and were ok, i thinks ill have them replaced.
one thing "a little heat" lol are you serious. do these things not pump out much heat? if not then do i have any options on the heat.

They have a dedicated fan to run through the heat exchangers which should give good heat. It's a case of tracing where it goes after it leaves the fan at the front of the alternator.
2 pipes go down to the he3at exchangers. Then the heat exchangers blow to a bakelite (plasticcy) box and up the chassis of the van.
If the heat exchanger flaps aren't opening, then you'll have no heat.
If rocker boxes or push rod tubes are leaking, you'll have fumes.
If you had beans last night you may have fumes!
If your lady doesn't like the van, no matter what you do... There'll be fumes!

lol, lady loves the van. the van is nice hoping to get some good use out of it. put petrol in last night and it was pissing out under the front passenger seat think it only does it when engine is on as when i got home none has leaked out, any idea.

I think you will find your tank may be corroded/ leaking (a common fault) especially when you fill it up, or it could just be a faulty pipe seal (doubtful) they usually corrode where the heater ducting pipe lies over the tank valley. A lot of crap collects here.
If you never have a route planned ...how can you ever be lost?
mine leaks if i fill it right up into the neck,,,, it leaks from the hoses that go to the expansion tanks which are located under each arch behind the front wheels. replace the hoses or just dont fill it quite as much.
you will get good heat out of the heater but you need everything set up correctly. heres how to make it warm.
remove the grill and tape up the fresh air intake which is behind it (this stops icy cold fresh air forcing its way in as you drive forwards) in the cab slide all 3 heater sliders accross to the right. then go to the exchangers and looking through from the rear wheels to the front of each exchanger you will see some steel riser pipes (about 2" diameter) which have heat pods on top. the levers on these pods should be fully forward. if they aren't then tie them fully forward with cable tywraps or similar. then open the tailgate and engine cover, take a look at the pipes from the fan on the alternator which go through the tinware and connect to the back of the heat exchangers. make sure they aren't torn or dislodged.
the system works by pushing air from the fan on the alternator,, through the double skinned heat exchangers which heats the air, then up through the pods where if its too hot you can open the flaps and cool things down, then into the large pipe to the heater box at the front.
if you set all thing as i've listed them you will have hot air up the windscreen, to put some heat to your feet slide the top 2 sliders about half inch to the left.
remember that if there are any leaky joints along the whole system you will lose heat and also the higher the engine revs, the more hot air you will get.
mine works fine even in winter

my last van was a 1980 1.9 and the heat exchangers were dodgy. literally, i would put on two pairs of socks and two pairs of trousers to do a long run. at night i even drove with a sleeping bag round my legs. in addition to the flimsy heat from the rickety heat exchanger system on those buses, there's a lovely extra ventilation point where the accelerator lever goes through the floor which can make a long winter drive pretty miserable.
no such trouble with the watercooled machine it has to be said.
