A/C CUTTING OUT WHEN HOT AND NOT RESTARTING

Post by Gunslinger »

I'm hoping someone a little more technical can give me some pointers as to some likely causes of my problem.

My air cooled 2.0 cu bus starts and runs perfectly but this fault has occurred 3 times now when the engine gets hot after a reasonable run.
It cuts out without warning and wont restart, almost like complete ignition failure or the fuel has been turned off. After this the engine will turn and will try to fire but it just wont catch. After some time the ignition key turns but even the starter motor stops turning. After leaving it for 10 minutes or so it will start and run perfectly, almost like something has cooled down !

Any pointers or advice will be brilliant.

Thanks
Stuart

ok guessing here, but I was told that a coil can break down when hot....causing rough running or even cutting out. Won't restart until coil has cooled.

Do you get the dash lights when it cuts?

Do a search on coil and see if anything comes up!

Thanks Em. No dash lights and no rough running. Its just dies without warning. It has got a new coil but I wouldnt rule it out though.

Thanks again

Hi gunslinger,

ok another shot in the dark. John's van started this.....he had a dodgy earth on the gearbox. Slightly different issue in that some mornings it wouldn't start, though.

Have you checked all your earth connections (battery, gearbox and engine)? Are the connections on the starter sound?

just some guesses...but your problem does sound electrical.

(and sommat to do until someone comes along who knows what they are talking about!)

All added to my to do list.
I just called the mechanic who does some work on my bus and he suggested coil or ignition amplifier so I think I'll try a new coil for what they cost.

Thanks again Em

Gunslinger,

me again!! Slow day at work, and coffee break has given me time to search.....bung power loss in the search engine....

I have learned:

that if everything goes....INC lights on the dash....then it could be the igintion switch. A big bunch of heavy keys can wear the ignition switch apparently, esp if they are swinging around!
Battery and oil lamps lit show that the ignition switch is ok, and the fault more likely a duff connection at the coil, or the coil itself!

Take care...must go and do some work now!

Not sure what you do for a living but I'm thinking you're in the wrong job and maybe you could become my PA :D

The dash lights work so I'm guessing the ignition switch is ok but I'll keep my eye on it and keep my fingers crossed the coil solves the problem
