van with golf 1800 engine refusing to keep running

Van would not even turn over a couple of days ago battery was no good

got new battery straight away van turned over and ran

but after about a second it stopped running

I've fitted a new fuel filter today but still runs a couple of seconds and dies

Anybody got any ideas?

maybe yer fuel pump has finnally died,cj.

Maybe but It still whirs when you turn the ignition on like its priming

and there was plenty of pressure at the injection end of the fuel line
