help over fridge

i have just managed to take out our fridge. as its not working there is no flame comming on. its sparking but no alighting so am about to clean it and turn it upside down.
What do i need to check?
it is a rm212
can i check the fridge works without putting it back in?
please any help greatfully recieved as total newbie on this

if you can safely connect up gas and the fridge is in a big open space( or leave garage doors open) then yes, but remember fumes kill, even if you cant smell them........
