2.1 Watercooled Digifant Fiel Injectors Question

Post by grenjs »

I have removed the engine on our Westy to give it a good tidy-up - including replacing the fuel pipes front to rear.

I note on the end of each injector there is a small length of rubber pipe (about 1.5" long") where it connects to the Fuel Distributor with a small jubilee clip.

Ours looks OK'ish, but seeing as I have the new fuel pipe I was considering replacing these small lengths. Is this possible? If so how do I get the small length of rubber off the end of the injector?

Research on the web seems to suggest this length of rubber come with the injector when purchased.

i think these short hoses are crimped on with a metal ring, they replace them when you get injectors ultrasonically cleaned, and there is also a tiny filter basket in there as well which they replace, i have pulled one of these hoses off a scrap injector without too much trouble, but wether they would seal properly again if pushed on and not crimped i dont know. they might be available from places which do ultrasonic injector cleaning, they could prob advise you.
short lengths of hose held on with proper fuel hose clips (the type you crimp either side) if you know the sort i mean, would prob be as good.
also, you probably know, but dont just use any old fuel tubing, get the proper 12Bar rated high pressure stuff for all lines after the fuel pump,(tank to pump, and return line from the regulator is ok with std stuff)
high st. motor factors may not sell the 12bar stuff , you may need a bigger one. hope that helps.

Cheers for that. Very useful information.

I think for the time being I'll leave them be and look for a new set in the near future.

I obtained the new fuel lines from Van-Cafe in the USA where the van was originally exported to and where they have a fair number of these Vanagons, so I would have thought they would be the correct bar - but I'm going to check.

I went down this route, and had new pipes crimped on and ultrasonically cleaned. I was then driving down the motorway, and pulled off into Mole Valley Farmers, and was waved at by a member of staff. I pulled up, and to my horror found that one of these new crimped on hoses had burst, and was pumping neat fuel over the engine. How she did not catch fire I will never know.

So now I have bought from German e-bay a brand new set of injectors which cost 100 quid, which was the same price as the re-funded re-built injectors. I would leave yours well alone, or really find someone that knows what they are doing. The design of the injector means that the crimping tool struggles to get in close enough to crimp well. I would not chance it on those injectors again. The new injectors are still in their boxes, as the second set runs just fine.

After some thought, I've decided to leave the injectors well alone. Considered replaced the small hoses, but I've been advised not too from many sources throughout the day.

Your experience is exactly what I want to avoid! The whole purpose of this engine out and tidy up was to replace old hoses and fuel lines (amongst other work) and I would rather be safe than sorry.

£100 for new injectors from the German eBay site? I'm going to investigate that one. Thanks for the tip.
