Post by Pete Nice »

It seems very quiet on the Syncro front this week. what's everyone up to?

Any secret modifications going on? Are you all squirreled away in the garage.

Or are you all out extreme camping?

We could do with some pictures for inspiration...

I am just doing the finishing touches to mine for now before I pop off to DVLA.

Some extreme restoration going on here, so will be off the road for a few weeks too.

New rear wing panels, dropside sills and locker doors, then a complete respray. Taking a few pics as we go, then I'll post a few when we're done.

I have now started the conversion of my van at long last. Have just put in three Seitz windows completes with built in fly screens and blinds. Double glazed of course.
Kyham motordome arrived today, to add to the pile of bits to put in.

Wow! Looks like everyone is on an extreme make over!

It's good to see what others are up to, there will be some nice Syncro's running around at shows soon hopefully.

Good work lads...

Kudos to Blackdog for that extreme pickup resto. Original panels will no doubt disappear soon so do it while you can. Simon, those windows rock, good job.

My mission to expend absurd amounts of cash on Syncros continues, with the pickup being the main project at the moment.

Last autumn I put in a rebuilt GTD motor from a Passat, which has been very successful. After that the bodywork has seen some lovin', with a new sill on the nearside and a few new panels here and there. Over Xmas the whole rear third of the truck was stripped down pretty much to bare metal, and refinished with countless VW L90D rattle-cans. Theres a couple more bits of welding, which I hope to have done before summer.

As the new motor is proven sound, I've started tweaking it a bit. Boost is upped from .5 to .8 bar, and I've put about an 1/8 of turn on the fuel screw. This has made a worthwhile difference to the power. Next tweak will be adjusting the boost pin in the LDA, but I do need to get my EGT gauge installed first.

As I'm getting some propshaft vibes and vibration/ringing in corners, I've bought a new HD shaft from GKN driveline in Leek. Top service, the new shaft was completed and ready for shipping the day after my order.

Also just got some mint dropsides to replace the old rusty/bent ones.

Also just got some front lift shims from Syncro-Services. Hoping to do the installation this weekend, along with the new prop, in time for the Bucks Syncronauts meet.

There's a bunch of other minor upgrades in the pipeline, and I'm also toying with the idea of a two-tank SVA conversion. Already sourced a second fuel tank in the form of an autosleeper camper water tank which will fit very nicely in the locker against the sloping bulkhead.

All in all a bit mental really but I enjoy it !

Jesus!

I am ashamed with my lack of effort!

I have a top tip for a cheap roof rack though if anyones interested?

Volvo 740 from ebay 99p! move the mounting feet to the outside, then make 6 off 80mm spacers for the feet.

I could have sold mine for a wad of cash, but spilt the beans instead. I didn't have the time to make another...

Forgot to mention I'm planning to re-bush the front-end too and have some HD dampers to go on at some point. Already done a brake re-furb all round.

Lee, what are those white things in the photo, spacers ? If so what thickness ? Have you had any problems with the dampers topping out ?

yes andy they are spacers and are 20mm. my front end was an inch lower than the back at 17.5 inches wheel centre to arch.
i was hoping for about an inch lift to get it at 18.5 inches same as the rear but have ended up with more.
haven`t tested it or run it out on the road yet so it will probally settle a little.
should end up with about 500mm wheel centre to arch may be 525mm so not a lot over what vw quote for standard.
