hook up problem

Hi i need a bit of help, i just bought a hook up lead and a adapter to plug into the mains but it doesnt fit on my van! :(
The inlet socket on the side of the van is different to the one on the lead, it only has 2 pins, my van is a german westfalia joker, i knew that the socket inside would be a euro plug and i was going to use a travel adapter for that but the outside one is different as well!
Ive searched the forum but not found a solution, what lead or adapter do i need, i cant seem to find one.
Any help would be great, thanks

If the male socket on the van only has 2 pins it wont have an earth. you would be better replacing the socket

If you arn't happy with electrics dont tackle this yourself!!!

Sounds as if you have a Shuko type plug.
Have a look at this site>>>>

here is a piccy of the offending socket, for some reason it wont show it the right way up......oh well. weird its the right way up now.........

That plug looks more of an American one or even French.

All I suggest is get a new female Shuko.

I would buy a standard type hook-up socket and replace that old one with it. You should be able to buy one that`s a straight swap for the one you`ve got. Try these:

Personaly...I would start again with New plug, RCD and wiring.

Should just be a straight swap, 3 wires to change over.

Take note of what The Rev Kev says though, electrickery isn`t something to fool with :shock: If there is an probs with the circuit breaker/RCD unit then it needs sorting before you plug into it :?

That's a euro/German fitting, it mates with a round two pin mains connector found over in the fatherland.

I've just done this conversion on our van and it was a doddle. Got new inlet socket from Just Kampers and then had to cut the hole in the bodywork slightly bigger to accomodate (used a £13 single speed jigsaw fitted with steel cutting blade). The drilled 4 new holes in side of van using an undersized metal drill bit then fitted the socket with self tapping screws - job done! Took me about half an hour and I'm a numpty (did already have my interior out though!).

Got a problem with the sink water pump electrics.
The water pump only works when the engine is running.
I have 12 volts at the leisure battery and the two fuses behind the driver's seat are ok.
I is a 1900cc 1985 Vanagon LHD.
Would really appreciate some advice before I spend hours ripping the electrics out.

Jimgal,

Sounds as if your sink water pump requires more current (amps) than your leisure battery can provide. :cry:

When your engine is running the alternator will provide the extra input via the split charge relay to get the pump to work.

I would think, either the leisure battery is past its best, (or needs a good long slow charge) or the pump is drawing more current than it should, perhaps bearings, something partially jamming / blocking it?

Check the leisure battery voltage while the pump is trying to run (engine off) and see what reading you have then.

sounds to me like the pump is being powered oiff the fridge or split charge feed..... i have seen this before, when a new pump was fitted the fitter piggy backed onto the fridge feed for power, and therefore it only worked when engine running........

Just one more question :) ......My black buzzing box isnt working and hopefully it might be fixed by a electrician. But will the hook up work okay without it? i know in changes 240v to 12v to charge the batteries etc but without it it wont fry the 12v electrics on the van will it?
