Starter Bush Removal

Hi

I have what seems to be described a "lazy starter". Looking at other posts and wiki I suspect that the bush needs to be replaced. How easy is it to remove and refit.

Have done it in an Aircooled....getting the old one out was the worst bit...especially if it is in pieces. Thick screw driver with a piece of cloth persuaded all the little bits to come out.

"If all goes well I have changed a starter motor and bush in 1/2 hour.
But I did have one that was so worn the tap hardly had any thing to grip on, that took around an hour.

If you are going to do it yourself it would be worth getting a few things together first.

1. M12 tap
On to the square end press a stainless or brass nut on I used a nice big vice to do this. You will then be able to use a socket and ratchet to drive the tap in to the bush.

2. A allen bolt that the head will fit in the bush, a strong washer and a nut to lock the washer against the head of the bolt.
I use this on the bush and tap it home with a hammer. Just make certain the bush is going in square and not cocked.

It is also a good idea to get a small snap seal plastic bag to put some oil in then the bush leave for a few days to thoroughly lube the bush.

a lot easier with the driveshaft removed.

the method I used was
a) soak the bush overnight
b) remove starter
c) disconnect and tie back the driveshaft
d) use an electricalscrew driver to break and remove the bush (not the best way but the only way I could get it out)
e) use the top starter bolt with the nut on to position the bush in the starter motor hole and tap in with a mallet
f) reconnect drive shaft
g) reconnect starter (after lots of WD40 in the old bearings)

starter spun really well for about a week, then I simply replaced it for a new ohne instead.

Don't know about watercooled, but on an Aircooled, you can remove the old bush using the bolt that holds the spare wheel cover in place! You have to taper the end a bit with a file and it works a treat it did for me anyway.

Also, you don't have to soak the new bush overnight, just pop it on your thumb fill it with oil and squeeze between thumb and forefinger - thanks go to mr Baxter of Brickwerks fame for that tip you can actually see the oil seep through the sides of the bush!
