Which brand of new filters do I have fitted and why?

Hi Folks,

I'm taking my '90 1.6Td T3 for a good servicing next Thursday and I'd like your opinions about which Filters you recommend I have fitted. I'd like to supply them myself instead of my mechanic getting generic ones from a motor factor. Is it just a matter of me ordering them from VW or are there some super-duper filters that only those in the know are aware of?

I read somewhere that oil filters are not all made to the same standards though I don't know the difference between them.

If you have time, i'd really appreciate your help with this so I give my van the best gear I can, while I own it.

It's also having all new belts, along with new oil and some other bits done too. I can barely wait to drive it when it's as good as it can get. It is only a standard 1.6Td engine but that's fine by me for now. I'll by two of everything because we're off for a tour of Europe in it in a couple of weeks and it'll need doing again in 3,000 miles or so.

Mann, Knecht, Bosch, Crossland all good. Others probably good, but I've grown to like those listed. Technical reasons.... Nah!

thanks guys. i'm looking for them online now. Ebay seems to be the first place I end up but i'm sure there are others.

I think I will name my van 'Klaus' too. It kinda makes sense when you stop thinking about it.

Hi Simon,

thanks for your reply. I think i'm turning into a VW spotter or something because now I have one, they seem to be everywhere - though I haven't yet seen one like my Calypso Atlantic.

I'd like to know why filters vary in quality or design. I'm quite into the technical stuff if you can be bothered to get into it with me or if not i'll dig around until I find something.

Are Mann the original product used by VW or something? Is this a purist thing or is there some intrinsic value to using Mann over say Bosch or Champion?

Thanks for your support. This is quite a steep learning curve i'm on. I was chatting to someone earlier about a bespoke Vege conversion. I don't have to have a full Elsbett conversion for £1,575 and I can have elements etc for £300-400 on a single tank. Something to consider.

What ever you do don't fit a Fram filter, they are the most cheap nasty filters you can find.
MANN were OEM to VW, but nowadays VW chop and change, Bosch, Knect etc are good filters.
Why are they sh!t? they just are!
Theres a few Atlantics about, aparently they made 950, of that 950, 500 were pop tops, the rest high tops.
White the most popular, then Calypso green then red.
More Diesels that petrols, thankfully.

I would agree with whats already been said, get Them fro m GSF and save a few bob, also if its your first service since having the van get a new dizzy cap and spark plugs + leads as this can make a big difference, if theyhave not been changed for a while you can notice the difference especially in wet and damp conditions.

and it's the thought that counts.

As i'm learning more and more about T3's (by the way, why do some folk call them T25's when they are Type 3's?)
i'm also learning some of the common names given to parts too.

So thankyou all of you who take time to answer questions and share knowledge. The last 9 days of owning my camper have been made so much more easy because of this.

they are NOT type3's...

and you have unwittingly "opened that can of worms" again...

T3 is Transporter version 3
We call them T25 (type 25, VW actually call them T2, type 2) but part numbers generally start with 25 from the chassis numbers "type number" ie 251, 252. 253 etc etc depending on van pickup RHD LHD etc etc etc...

Now let's not start old unsolveable arguments that lead nowhere anyway. Some call it a T25 and other's a T3. It is what it is, regardless of what it's called - such is the nature of ego.

And why do people keep worms in cans anyway, I prefer to pickle mine in a jar of vinegar and bring them out on special occasions.
