Hi all,

Hot on the heels of my butchered thermostat is a ruined pump!

It looks like someone snapped the bolt which held it onto the block - and then drilled it out - unfortunately they went a bit too far and drilled right through into the pump chamber :evil:

Not sure if this has been responsible for any of the overheating issues or not, as during use the hole is occupied by the new bolt... and masses of sealant... I guess perhaps some sealant could have come loose and got stuck somewhere.

Anyway, now that I have the pump off, I really don't like the idea of putting it back on... A non-genuine replacement pump is 20 quid...
Anyone know what a genuine one costs, and is it worth the extra money?

I always use geniune unless its an emergency, pump went on my td last year and i needed asap, went to unipart and paid £1 more than vw RETAIL price for a nasty one.

What engine is it? We replaced the water pump on our early DG in January and the genuine VW pump for that engine is no longer available, so it was a trip to gsf for us.

Its a 1984 1.9 petrol manual DG

Spoke to VW this morning, a pump is 38 quid... Not bad compared to 20 quid from GSF.

Although they said they'd have to order it and weren't sure how long that would take... I only just got the thermostat, it was the last one in the whole country apparently!

That's what they told me as well so I paid the money and the refundable surcharge . . . a few days later they rang me back to say that it's a discontinued part!

its ok, they are getting another shipment in about a month... I was prepared to wait but really want to be back on the road in time for van west !!!

BMW made a mistake in the early 80's they tried to save a few quid and fitted plastic impellor in there water pumps...they ALL failed at about 150,000 miles (i had 3), so off to GSF for a metal German one...last BMW i sold had 300,000 miles and still sweet.
O my god...i lost a o.....im not cool anymore KlEINER FEIGLING..

Most of the Z series BMWs still have plastic impellers and many still fail!

If you have a kind motor factor near you, you may be able to find a thermostat that fits and works with a lower opening temperature.

I don't think the pupm, is the reason for overheating. I think you need to change your head rings and rubber seals.
