Engine changing- removal of the old and prepping of the new

Hi All

I have bought a 2nd hand engine to go into my air cool 2.0 T25. I've never changed an engine in one opf these before, so I thought i'd ask if there are any tips for doing this or do's and don'ts so to speak.

Whilst I have the new (2nd hand) engine sitting here is there anything I should do or check before installing?

What about the physical removal and fitting of the engines, any advice or tips here? If you've done an engine swap on one of these before and thought to yourself if I do this again I wouldn't do that, that way or next time I'd definetly do that first etc, I'd be glad to hear of it or any experiances you had Or if there is any online articles about this i'd appreciate the link. :)

check the fuel pump works before you fit the engine, they are a bugger to get to once in, check the tinware, it is also a bugger to change some of it when in...............
i would also be replacing the starter motor bush whilst it is easy to get to

disconnect the gear linkages before you lower the box to drop the engine off, or you risk bending it, and save lots of alignment hassles, and also have a good look at the starter motor main connection, if its old, we snapped the stud out of the solenoid when refitting the power lead.

as for the actual dropping of it, large jack under the engine, small jack under the gearbox, and a couple of axle stands to use as support.Run the van up the ramps, and spray all the bolts you need to undo a couple of days before with penitrating oil, makes life easier.

oh, and whilst the engine bay is empty, change all the rubber petrol pipes and clips

Another couple of questions, how long would you allow to remove an air cooled engine and how long to put one in, assuming all went well.

If you gave the job to somone else to do how much would you expect to pay?

last one we did ( me and my Bro) outside, on a sloping driveway half a hour to have it on the floor ( if all went well) and 2 hours to refit the new one AFTER swapping all the bits over you need to and assoiated fiddling...... but it never goes that well.......we had to source and replace a starter motor which held us up, and had losts of swapping over of tinware and carbs and things to do between old out and new in

dunno how long a garge would take, depends if you can find one that knows what end the engine goes..........
