OK this may seam like a strange question but here goes, bare with me:
Can anybody tell me which way the coolant flows and returns in both the rad and the heater in a 1988 van please? as I am connecting all the pipes up to a different engine and have to chop and change them all.
Cheers

A general Rule of thumb is Hot water rises and Cold water Falls.
So Cool water goes in at the bottom of the engine (usually via the water pump inlet) and the hot water from the engine comes out of the top (usually the thermistat exit)
Hot water goes into the top of the radiator and the cooled water comes out of the bottom of the radiator.
Hope that is of some help.

Re: Coolant question
My van is not available to check anything at present, but my interpretation of the Haynes diagram (which is nothing special) for a late WBX is..........
Hot flow from both banks joins and goes forward to rad top (as SplendiferousII says).
A tapping off this hot feed goes to the heater, the return from the heater connects to the main return to the water pump inlet downstream of the thermostat.
The main return from the bottom of the radiator goes to the thermostat, which when open allows the flow to go to pump inlet.
When the thermostat is in the 'cold' condition, I understand from previous threads that both the return from the radiator is closed off and the hot flow from both cylinder banks are directed via an open port to the water pump inlet. In other words the thermostat closes the main flow from the radiator and allows circulation within the engine when 'cold' and opens the main flow from the radiator and closes the re-circulation within the engine when 'hot'.
Must stress my knowledge of this area is very limited, so I'm open to being shot down, but I like to help if possible.

Thanks for the advice.
I trial fitted the cossy motor together and I need to get water to the two main pipes and water the the heater from the cossy motor. At least I know which is which for the VW side, now just got to get the cossy motor side sorted out.
Pictures of mock build on modified section. Going to assemble and install into position tonight if I get chance.
Cheers Again
