Hi Kev,
On the back of the headlight switch, there is a hole for a lamp holder / lamp of some discript to luminate the switch when turned on.
Clearer or is the beer still talkin'

I've wondered this too as mine apears to have a hole for a light but one doesn't fit it (of course I tried!). ETKA shows a bulb fitted but the wireing diagram doesn't. Maybe british vans don't have a bulb (they have a different switch to left hookers, though I don't think I've found a bulb on any wireing diag), maybe early vans have it but they dropped it on later ones and its still pictured in the parts cat? Unlike the heated rear screen switch which alows the symbol to let backlighting through, the headlamp switch doesn't seem to so even if there was a bulb in it it wouldn't be any use. To be fair its of limited use as you'd need to have found the switch in the first place to trigger its ilumination.

The only switches that are imuminated as such are the heated screen (has one bulb for backlighting and another for its warning lamp) and the hazzard lights (which runs its single bulb through a resistor when the hazzards aren't on to backlight it though its so dim it doesn't give off any light, just waists energy, well done VW). For some resion they didn't even bother iluminating the fog lamp switch, though it has a warning lamp for the rear fog (the front ones shineing on the road must have been deemed warning enough for the design team I guess?).
