Replacing/repairing fuel pump

Post by 'hanish-boy »

Hi folks,

So we were away at the weekend (in Ardnamurchan if you're interested:-) and when it came time to head for home the van wouldn't start.

Seems like fuel was being drawn along the fuel line but not getting pumped up to the engine.

So it looks like the pump's gone.

Couple of things, then-

Can the pump be repaired? Or must it be replaced?

How easy/difficult is this likely to be?
What tools are required?

Where's the best place to buy a replacement? How much should I expect to pay?

Oh yeh- 1982 2.0l CU Aircooled.

Thanks again for any help/info etc.

Replacing/repairing fuel pump

Post by Bowton Lad »

Unfortunately the mechanical fuel pump for the 2.0l CU engine is no longer available. :(

You could fit an electrical fuel pump as some other 80-90ers have done.
Alternatively you could try to buy a secondhand pump from one of the traders on this forum or you could contact:-

ROB- My apologies. My internet hamster was running slow and I had to prod him a couple of times before he responded, then my first attempts got through after all.

Bowton Lad- thanks for the response.

No longer available? Arrgh. That's a bit annoying. I'll have a sniff around and see if I can find a 2nd hand one.

Thanks.

I'm now looking at fitting an electric pump but I'm unsure which will fit.
Can anyone tell me if this one will do the trick.

Specs-
This brand new fuel pump is universal fitment and comes complete with pre-filter inlet union, outlet union, mounting bracket and instructions. The pipe tails are 8mm.

The pump is quiet in operation and very compact and only measures 3 1/2inch long X 2 1/2inch high.

Suitable for single or twin carbs. The pump is 12v and will flow 27gallons/hour at 7psi and is self priming.

thanks again for any help :ok

That pump is too high a pressure - needs only 2-3psi you could get a pressure regulator or better to get the right pump in the first place - I used a facet but a more basic one - one up from the very smallest I think.
This is the one - no point in fitting a higher pressure and volume than you need - CUs are only 70 odd BHP after all

Use a rubber cotton reel to mount it just behind the tank outlet on the chassis rail and it won't be as noisy as some people think these pumps always are. Looks like you can choose the size of the tails connectors with that eBay supplier - I'd go for the smaller ones - they will be closer to what is already fitted than the 8mm supplied as standard.
Here's a pic of what I did:

I am just about to remove one from my CU engne.
I have moved to an electric pump as I am changing the carbs.

Let me know if you are interested, I will be sticking it in the for sale spot soon anyway!

Cheers
