1.9 DG to 2.1 DJ, what should I do???

Post by coilspring »

Just got my mitts on a 2.1 DJ engine with a view to replace the original 1.9 DG in my camper.

This undoubtedly has been covered before so apologies if I'm covering old ground but would love to know more experienced opinions on the below:

1) should I keep the complete fuel injection system on the 2.1 or fit the inlet and carbs from my DG?

2) If I keep the fuel injection system, will I need to change the fuel pump or the tank or even both?

3) Can I wire the fuel injection ECU into the existing loom or do I need to change the vehicle loom?

It seems a shame to remove all the injection system from the DJ as it looks complete but what is the real advantage of this over the carb set up? worth the extra hassle do you think?

Thanks peeps, hoepfully try and get out with you lot this summer sometime!

Mark

the choice is yours really, those of us running on LPG tend to go with the carbs, mainly because when on LPG the injectors are not used, and the carb set up works very well on the 2.1 with lpg

you will need to cahnge the fuel pump, the Dj engine hasnt got one fitted, as it uses a electric one mounted under the sill, near the tank outlet.the tank is the same for all intense and purpose!

if you are going with the inj sys, you will need all the loom from the donor vehicle, and if your van is a late model, it just plugs in where your DG loom unplugged - there are two brains for the injection

Nice one Mocki, its an early van (83) but I have the complete engine loom from the donor vehicle. Is this all I need?

apart from fuel pump, skill, willing, commitment etc......

Thanks CJ, I take it a swirl pot is something internal within the tank that can't be retrofitted then?

the stock 1.9 carb is great on the DJ, loads more low down grunt, just changing the engine will open your eyes........you just have to alter the dj timing or run super unleaded fools gold......

hi mate,

as Mocki says, we used the standard 1.9 carb on the 2.1 engine. Runs great on LPG, ok on petrol (but have found out we should be running superunleaded on the 2.1...so maybe things will improve there)

Don't need anything meaty....the 2.1 is much better performance wise than the 1.9. My camper accelerates up hills in 4th gear....the same hills that the 1.9 struggled to maintain a constant speed on. Which is why my one last 1.9 will come home next week as a 2.1! (again, on the 1.9 carb)

Have you driven a 2.1 at all??

em,

No I have never driven a 2.1 but glad I have bought it now looking at the comments in favour of it. OK, sounds much more straightforward just to take the intake manifold / carb off the 1.9 and bolt on to the 2.1. Think i'll do a compression test on the 2.1 before it goes in just in case. sorted!

Nice one guys and gals, looks like i'll have a injection system going spare then. If any needs anything from it, gis us a shout!!!

As Mocki and Em have said really ... except you'll have to swap the cooling system over ... although I believe Shepster has kept his early system post seeing the light he may be able to advise on that side of things. The 2.1 has the later DG stylee system with the addition of the oil cooler which requires a different waterpump and thermostat housing.

The 2.1 5 speed gearbox has a 4 pinion differential, although the 1.9 box will still fit and work.

BTW our's uses the DG carb, because it was gassed.

All the best, Ian.
