I fitted a 2nd hand fuel pipe to my syncro as mine had corroded and lo and behold it's now leaking from where the pipe goes into the tank. Between the pipe and that rubber ring thing. Is there something I can smear around this or if I take the pipe off again around the pipe....? The ring is in good condition and did not leak before!
I'm still looking for some 15 inch rims!

I have just refurbished my petrol tank. I removed the whole thing and replaced all the petrol lines and painted the filler pipe which thankfully was not corroded. I replaced that seal which fits in the mouth of the tank, where the filler pipe pushes into it. It was very akward to get it in right when I trial fitted it. The filler tube was gripping on the seal and trying to push it into the tank. I suspect that you may have unseated it by doing this. I overcame it by oiling the first inch of the tube, and then putting a ring of Blue Hymolar sealant, which is petrol submerssion resistant. This then lubricated the pipe and she slipped in a treat, the hymolar was there for just in case.

I removed the tank to waxoil behind it, and to replace those lines which sit on top. I found all to be in good condition, and that the smell of petrol that I get is a VW design shortfall. The expansion vent pipes which sit on top of the tank join and then follow the other pipes back up to behind the filler cap plastic panel. It then just terminates, so any expansion fumes are vented direct to air, and hence the smell. I note that the MV engines have a carbon canister return system so shouldnt smell. (according to ETKA).

I would try removing, oiling, and replacing your filler pipe again. I dont think that the hymolar will do amything unlesss the seal is very loose. On my trial fits it just wiped it of the tube, but it does form a little ridge of sealant, but mine, like yours managed fine without any, and the tank is at no time pressurised.

I was just about to try and trace that fuel smell and considering all your fittings are in good nick I'd say mine are too so I'll live with the design fault.
Cheers,
Tony
Had a fuel smell prob a while back, turned out it was only the filler cap. Got a secondhand one from CJ. All sorted.
Most seem to always replace those two valves on the top of the tank if its ever removed...

CJ warned me that those two gravity valves would break when the tank came out, and they did, so they were replaced. From VW, about 8 pound each. They are the same as the two wheel drive ones. They vent the top of the tank, but close if you end up upside down.
Getting the tank out is not something I would want to do again, or get it back in again for that matter.

filler pipe
Thanks for the advice! I've ended up spot welding where the hole was on the pipe and putting that back in! It hasn't leaked yet and I've ordered another rubber bung thing from vw just incase it leaks at later date. The tank looks like a real witch to remove, I'm not planning to do that yet, altho the straps look a little ropey.
Of course, Vaseline is the normal lubricant for that rubber...
being petroleum based.
Can supply a strap design, if you have some stainless strip.. been there, earnt the medal, & photographed most of it... but I do understand that the tank is not that likely to fall down with or without them !
Always take pump down carefully & chck for corrosion of body and leaks when having a look at the straps or the tank - they can leak badly just like the filler pipe.
