Did you ever get a cost?
Of course he didn't, its an open ended question. In theory it could be done for nothing, in practice it could cost anything up to a new TD AAZ or Tdi (£3,000), and any amount for labour, depending on accompanying mods...
Costs you have to work out yourself, by finding an engine, buying it, getting a quote for fitting it and then treating that quote as an estimate, and if its isn't done by someone who knows exactly what they are doing, then add all the money to put it right and add the mods to make it a 'good' conversion... few companies will quote a firm price for non-standard work.
Syncro-Nutz will quote for a Tdi conversion, within reason I believe.
Don' t forget the 80-90 Wikipedia has a fair bit of help, info and a smattering of wisdom in it
