sick diesel 1.6d-help

Post by transportersrule »

hi all
wondered if anyone has any ideas.
my 1.6d been running ok. then when i took it out later started to run a bit odd, like lack of fuel. when i stopped and had to restart needed lot of throttle, but started, bit lumpy but was smoking alot. i have changed the fuel filter but problem persists, needs throttle to start and when running it doesnt sound even. and wont idle, smoking alot. timing looks to be ok.
anyone got any ideas or if theres anyone local to me Ashford, Kent who could take a look would really appreciate it as am bit stuck without it on road. cheers

Mine had a similar problem it turned out to be a timing pulley had worked lose, you could actually see it wobbling when it was ticking over.

since you have replaced filter , how long have you run it for ? take it you filled filter with fresh diesel AND cracked injectors open to bleed lines/pump fully ? if you get an air lock it can be a tw@/while to get rid.
if you have to use throttle to make it idle properly make sure you rule out fuel 'starvation' etc first (easiest jobs)

Injectors will not need cracking off after filter change if filter has been filled.

if you filled new filter but had previous fuelling/air leaking into lines etc etc problems is it possible to still have air lock in pump/lines even with a full filter ? :?

If it sounds noisier than usual, I think you should check the timing. Have a feel at your cam belt too. Its just a case of working through the usual suspects. Poor starting could be glows. Blowing smoke could be an injector up the swannee. The whole lot could be the cam belt jumped a tooth.

Rocker cover off, turn crank so that no.1 cam lobes ar pointing upwards, look in hole in bellhousing and check that the 0 on the flywheel lines up with the pointer on the gearbox then check that the slot in the cam, at the end furthest away from you is perfectly parallel with the edge of the head.

After that, I'd take a shot gun and put it out of its misery.

Check operation of the cold start. Cable may have broken or frayed and the thing jambed in the on position.
