from what i believe, the engine runs, but loses power badly.....the guy selling it just didn't want any comebacks so sold it as this.....it's had a few quid spent on it in the last 12 months, there were reciepts for about £1k kicking around the van, mainly engine and suspension stuff IIRC......luckily i've just remembered a friend has a Jetta TD just sitting, so i may have a quick fix.....but maybe not lol :wink: .......i'll be getting it Sunday/Monday so i'll be able to have a thorough root around.......the figures quoted above frighten me a little......however, i've always had a soft spot for the Syncro's, and apart from the couple of body bits needed, rear arch, front step and around the 'funny' filler neck it's really solid, including the seams and lower front panel....all doors/tailgate are mint aswell.....i just don't like the 'ugly' roof much, but i'm sure it'll grow on me.......so it could well be heading for someone who knows a bit more than me for an examination.........anyone in the north west know their onions?


Thanks again for all the info........she's a keeper for sure, and at the price i got her for, i don't mind a wee bit of layout..........here's hoping it's not too much tho :lol:

Would be worth popping the head off and seeing if it's cracked badly, or gasket gone, or manifold cracked or leaking or all above... check the bores look OK and no nasties. Can possibly get a new head from A.W. Engineering (Darwen) Ltd. or SNutz or SSPares

But when tired often need a turbo refurb as well.. so have a look and see first, then take good advice? Might get you going quickly so you can take stock and diagnose the transmission...

cheers Harry........i've just phoned my friend and he says he'll let me have the jetta.......the head has been removed and tested, and is now on his bedroom windowsill :lol: ......he has the full gasket kit, and an intercooler aswell........mmm..........can these be fitted to a bus.......is there the room?

the jetta's turbo is apparantly in good nick too.....so like you say, i may get on my way sooner rather than later......the old girl still has MOT.......fingers crossed......just need to transport it now........my friend says my Audi A4 2.5 tdi will pull it no probs on a trailer, but i'm sure i'm exceeding towing weights by a fair bit.........i'll have to have a think.

It is fitted very well.........all the gutters are mint aswell......which helps a lot.

it's just the way it comes up from the screen top.....looks odd :lol:, especially with the 'ambulance' sign ......i may get it lit back up with something else up there......i'll have to think......but not neons.....or night rider :wink:

Aidan is in Warrington and is prob the best syncro expert near you.. have a word with him.. he might be up your way or offer petrol money for him to take the time out.. (he's quite busy with the gearboxes!!)

I've never seen a backlit "Syncro" badge...yet?

right........been to pay for it today.........sadly it's still sat where it is because the guy who was moving it was 'snowed in' yesterday.......which was fair enough, but hasn't had the decency to reply to my texts or calls today after stating he was going to do it.......i did give him the bank holiday op out.......but he said it didn't matter.........ah well.......only a day wasted :)

the guy still says the last owner was a numpty.....it was losing power and he part ex'd it for a fiesta.....after spending £700 on cambelt, service, CV boots etc........the problem should be revealed this week i hope......if i finally get it to where it's going......

AW eng, not far from me = pricey :roll:

spoke to the guy on a campsite in lakes last year (he was in an AW eng van)

confirmed what i'd been told previously, £1900 to convert a 1.6 n/a to 1.9 n/a

£2200 1.6 TD to 1.9 TD

and they weren't fitting many new parts.
