Cutting out on LPG

Post by Hacksawbob »

van is misbehaving again seems to be mainly when slowing up but occasionally under power engine will just die seems to occur once warmed up not when cold. When it does the starter takes an age to get it going again. It runs a little ropey and uneven on petrol but doesn't cut out. I went through all the connections and gave them a wiggle in the engine bay earths were cleaned about 3 months ago. any suggestions? 2.1 on a 1.9 carb.

Does it idle ok?
does it "blow out" on a windy day when the wind gusts from the right?

I would suspect the idle circuit on the vaporiser is running a bit lean...

the pressure in the air intake goes up, weakens the mix on the vaporiser (it thinks there is less suction) so the "flame" goes out..
had a load of trouble on the IoM... (always windy) for a couple of weeks until I sussed it... the idle bleed needs to be out far enough to prevent this, but then the "power" valve needs to be turned down a fraction too.. but also the "sensetivity" sometimes needs adjusting.. its a balancing act.. and needs very careful adjustment and monitoring..
I do not suggest you start messing with all those settings.. but its possible a 1/4 turn out on the idle screw will cure it with no major drop in mpg...
Or you can remove the "card" that seperates the air intake from the engine bay.. it can help..

Cheers, it's always windy at werk and it's just in a particular 'position' as if wind blowing up the exhaust 'blows out' the flame. the tick-over's slightly low on't 2.1 ... about 850rpm.

Daft I know !

Do you know, I thought I was being silly too....Mine cuts on gas if you go down hill, round a corner with the clutch depressed and brake on (right hand or left hand turn).

Is exactly as if the gas has gone out!!! Now I have learnt to make sure the clutch is out - tend to go round in second. Yes I know that it how it should be done anyway....

hehehe

who would have guessed.

Bob- change leads and plugs....unless very recent. parked ritchie up one evening....next day he was ropey as hell - wouldn't run on gas (stalling, cutting out) and just about on petrol. New leads....all back to normal...

Amazed me that there was no gradual deterioration - one day fine, the next day....nowt!

take care all

get it running good on petrol first , it ain't never going to run well on gas if it isn't , the gas switch isn't magic ,
service it first , and then if its running ok on the petrol but rough on the gas then speak to steve about it ..

im suffering from the "wind blowing my flame out too" i dont have the card seperator, and i dont have the inlet hose disconnected either....

it only does it when it really stupidly windy from the right...... and double priming it (key on, wait for click of lpg solenoids, then same again, then start) makes it start ok again, then keep the revs up.......... i really should have a fiddle, but its a roundtioit job..... i never seem to get time to fiddle with my own van........
